MCPHERSON, Kan. (AP) A McPherson man was sentenced to life without possibility of parole for 25 years in the stabbing death of a man who was found in a car near Galva. Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt says 47-year-old Samuel Nelson Darrah was sentenced Tuesday for his role in the November 2014 death of 39-year-old James Amery Croft. Darrah pleaded no contest in November to first-degree murder, attempted aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery. Two other men have already been sentenced in Croft’s death. Jody Hildebrand, 38, of Manhattan, was arrested in the 500 block of N. Seth Child. Rd. yesterday afternoon. Hildebrand was arrested on a Manhattan Municipal Court warrant for failure to appear. Hildebrand was denied bond, causing him to remain confined at the time of this report. Ronaldo Roberts, 53, of Ogden, was arrested in the 100 block of Ninth St. in Ogden last night. Guilty pleas in two separate cases were entered Tuesday in Pottawatomie County District Court. Martin Johnson of Wamego pled guilty to aggravated incest and furnishing alcohol to a minor for illicit purposes. Johnson’s sentencing has been set for February 16th. Johns was arrested last summer on River Pond road in the Tuttle Creek State Park just north of Manhattan. The victim was reported to be between the ages of 16 and 18. A small pond and some lost paperwork caused some friction between the city of Manhattan and property owners at Tuesday’s city commission work session. Property owners Byron and Michelle Lewis asked commissioners last night to pay for silt removal from a detention pond on their lot in the Lee Mill Heights district. While the Lewises maintain this pond has always retained water and been a fixture on the property, public works director Rob Ott said this pond was installed by city engineers for storm water management purposes. HESSTON — About $225,000 in grant money has been awarded to help support victims and first responders affected by last year’s mass shooting in Hesston. The Wichita Eagle reports the grant money was awarded to SafeHope, a domestic violence and sexual assault shelter that serves Harvey, McPerson and Marion counties. SafeHope will use the grant to provide support groups, mental health and counseling services, victim advocate services and resources for children. A total of $10,000 of the grant money, funded by the Victims of Crime Act, will go directly to the shooting victims to aid with transportation, clothing, food and lodging.…
TOPEKA — Authorities say a train has struck and killed a man after he lost control of his three-wheeled motorcycle near Paxico. Paxico is 16 miles southeast of Wamego. The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the victim as 64-year-old Frank Narvaez III, of Topeka. The patrol says he was turning late Monday when he veered off the road and onto nearby railroad tracks. The back end of the Harley Davidson became caught on the tracks, and Narvaez was still on the trike when an oncoming BNSF train came along.
