A couple of Kansas Department of Corrections inmates serving time on area convictions are up for public comment sessions and possible parole. A man convicted in Riley County nearly 35 years ago for second degree murder is one of those. Michael Long, 62, began serving his sentence in March of 1983, in connection with a case in August of 1982. Long has served most of his time at the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility. YODER — Authorities say a man accidentally was shot while trying to help kill a buffalo at a south-central Kansas meat-processing business. The Reno County Sheriff’s Department says Duane Helms of Moundridge was wounded in the leg shortly before 12:30 p.m. Friday at Yoder Meats in Yoder. Authorities say Helms was assisting a Yoder Meats employee in trying to shoot a buffalo so the animal could be butchered. TOPEKA — A few Kansas lawmakers are seeking to undo a law that will allow concealed guns in public hospitals and colleges. The proposal would permanently exempt several types of health care facilities and colleges from a law that allows guns in public buildings. That exemption will otherwise expire July 1. Supporters of allowing campuses to ban concealed guns are hopeful because the Legislature is more moderate than it was when the law passed in 2013. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Pittsburgh’s Chris Boswell set an NFL postseason record with six field goals and the Steelers eliminated the Kansas City Chiefs 18-16 to become the second victorious road team in the postseason. The Steelers took advantage of a holding penalty to negate a successful Kansas City two-point conversion after the Chiefs moved within two points with 2:43 left. Despite recent heartbreak in Lawrence and then in Lubbock, the K-State men’s basketball team went into Saturday’s contest against Baylor with a little bit of historical swagger. Since 2010, three teams ranked No. 1 in the country had fallen in Bramlage Coliseum, but a strong and consistent second half by Baylor made sure it wouldn’t be four straight. Junction City Police are investigating a reported aggravated battery incident early  Saturday that left one person in critical condition. JCPD indicates shortly before 1 a.m., police officers were dispatched to the Veterans Motorcycle Club in the one-thousand block of Grant Avenue, in reference to a disturbance. Through the course of the investigation, it was determined one victim sustained injuries and was transported to Salina Reginal Hospital where the subject was last listed in critical condition.
