KINSLEY — A 3-year-old boy is hospitalized in Wichita hospital after an accidental shooting at his home in Kinsley. The Edwards County Sheriff says two 3-year-old brothers were involved in the shooting Thursday night. KWCH reports Sheriff Bryant Kurth says one of the brothers accidentally shot the other. The sheriff says the injured boy was airlifted to Wichita suffering from significant blood loss but his condition was not available. Further details were not immediately available.

OVERLAND PARK — Kansas and Missouri officials say law enforcement officials have no reason to issue tickets for not wearing a seat belt instead of other tickets. The Kansas City Star reports that transportation officials in Kansas and Missouri say there’s no incentive for officers to issue more seat belt tickets. Overland Park Police Chief Frank Donchez Jr. says some officers overlooked traffic violations like speeding and instead cited motorists for not wearing seat belts when they’d actually been buckled up. OLATHE — Johnson County prosecutors say they will seek a death sentence for a 24-year-old man charged with raping and killing an Overland Park woman. Korrey Rinke is charged with capital murder in the August 2016 killing of 46-year-old Julianna Pappas. The Kansas City Star reports Rinke is accused of raping Pappas, beating her to death and leaving her body in a wooded area. Rinke was arraigned on rape and capital murder charges Thursday afternoon in Johnson County District Court. His attorneys entered not guilty pleas on his behalf.

The founding pastor of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan died of natural causes Monday at the age of 87. The Rev. Loren Werth first came to Manhattan in 1981 after being assigned to found the parish by the Salina Diocese. The Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 Board of Education approved the publication for the 2018-19 budget during their meeting Wednesday. Business Services Director Lew Faust said the total mill levy will be 56.140 mills, which is a .0128 decrease from last year’s budget. TOPEKA — Westar Energy will close its Tecumseh Energy Center and two other plants in the next four months. The company announced Wednesday it will close the energy center, and two steam generation units each at the Gordon Evans Energy Center in Colwich and at Murray Gill Energy Center in Wichita. Westar spokeswoman Gina Penzig says the closings of the fossil fuel plants were planned as part of Westar’s merger with Great Plains Energy. TOPEKA — Plans for better broadband coverage across Kansas recently got a boost from the Information Network of Kansas. The network has approved a $300,000 grant request from Gov. Jeff Colyer to complete a Statewide Broadband Mapping project. The map will be used by a state task force created by the Kansas legislature to identify and close broadband coverage gaps in Kansas. A group called Connected Nation will produce the map in collaboration with the state’s broadband service providers. The Hutchinson News reports the first draft of the statewide broadband availability map should be ready by Dec. 31.

LAWRENCE — A Eudora man has been found guilty of fatally shooting a man at a bar. A Douglas County jury on Wednesday found 37-year-old Danny Queen guilty of second-degree murder in the June 2017 death of Bo Hopson outside the D-Dubs Bar and Grill in Eudora. The Lawrence Journal-World reports Queen was intoxicated and had been thrown out of the bar that night.
