Kansas State women’s soccer bounced back after a rough season-opening loss with a 2-0 win at Portland State Thursday afternoon. The Wildcats used a pair of goals from sophomore Ryann Reynolds to secure the win. K-State (1-1-0) took the lead in the 43rd minute of the first half. Sophomore Anna Pagano gathered a loose ball around 35 yards away from Portland State’s goal. The Riley County commission on Thursday unanimously certified a 2025 budget of more than $104 million and a mill levy of 37.943 mills, meaning property owners will see a slight decrease in their taxes. This year’s mill levy is a 1.923-mill decrease from last year. A mill represents $1 in taxes for every $1,000 in assessed, taxable property value, so the owner of a $100,000 property who paid $458.69 in 2024 taxes would pay $458.16 on a home now valued at $105,000 in 2025, a .1% drop in county property taxes from 2024. A Junction city man was arrested Wednesday morning on a host of theft-related charges. 26-year-old Estarlin Almendares Guardado was arrested around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday in the 7400 block of Appennines at Fort Riley. He was then booked into the Riley County Jail on probable cause offenses of burglary; criminal use of a financial card; and identity theft. The total bond for Guardado was set at $20,000, and Guardado had bonded out of jail as of Thursday morning, officials said. For more information visit themercury.com

A man was arrested Tuesday night in connection with an aggravated assault that was reported in Manhattan, authorities said. Officers filed a report in the incident around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 2100 block of Fort Riley Boulevard. Riley County police listed a 61-year-old man as the victim in the case. Officials said Robert Darryl Williams, 59, of Manhattan, was arrested at 8:23 p.m. Tuesday and was booked into the Riley County Jail in connection with aggravated assault-use of a deadly weapon. Former Kansas State men’s basketball star Keyontae Johnson has signed a deal with the Charlotte Hornets, finding a new home after a rookie year in Oklahoma City. Johnson, a third-team All-American in Manhattan, was a second-round pick by the Thunder in 2023 and played on a two-way contract. RCPD is investigating after reports were filed for theft and forgery on Tuesday at Hi-Tech Interiors. Reports say that a known suspect to the company had falsified multiple receipts for labor, finances and materials spanning back to the year 2017.
