TOPEKA — Kansas lawmakers are demanding answers after protesters were locked out of the Statehouse last week. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that top leaders from both parties directed the director of Legislative Administrative Services to prepare a report during a meeting Wednesday. They want answers about when security officials can lock people out of the Statehouse and who has the authority to make such a decision. The Junction City Fire Department responded to a house fire late Tuesday night. JCFD said in a press release that the cause was accidental. The fire started at a single-story house at 805 West 7th St. in Junction City around 11:30 p.m. The 61-year-old homeowner was taken to Geary Community Hospital for smoke inhalation and was experiencing difficulty breathing. The fire began in a bedroom facing the street. JCFD found extensive heat and smoke damage in that room, with minimal damage to other rooms. WICHITA — Former U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom says three immigrant children who were separated from their parents at the border are still in the care of a Kansas nonprofit working under contract with the federal government. Grissom said he met Wednesday with the director of the non-profit The Villages Inc. along with Kansas child welfare officials and some legislators. EUREKA — The governor has declared an emergency after eight people were injured when a tornado slammed into a small town in eastern Kansas. The tornado touched down Tuesday night in the Greenwood County town of Eureka, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) east of Wichita. Kansas State University has named Ernie Minton as College of Agriculture interim dean and interim director of K State Research and Extension. Minton, associate dean of research and graduate programs for the college and associate director of research for K-State Research and Extension, will replace John Floros on July 1.
