The Riley County Police Department officer who was shot when responding to a domestic disturbance Friday in Manhattan has been treated and released from the hospital, according to a statement released by the RCPD Monday morning. At approximately 12:30 p.m., Friday, Sergeant Pat Tiede was shot after responding to the report of a domestic situation in the 3700 block of Hawthorne Woods Circle. Sergeant Tiede received a non-life threatening gunshot wound. He is currently continuing his recovery at home. The name of the man who shot at Riley County police officers and injuring one while barricading himself at his home at 3716 Hawthorne Woods Circle in Manhattan Friday afternoon has been identified. According to an arrest report by the RCPD, 38-year-old Mark Harrison was taken into custody after surrendering to authorities after two hours. Harrison is being charged for attempted capitol murder of a law enforcement officer and his bond was set at $2 million. UPDATE 3:12 p.m.: The situation involving the active shooter in the Hawthorne Circle area of northwest Manhattan has been resolved and Riley County Police Director Brad Schoen said it has been resolved with no further injuries. According to Schoen, the suspect peacefully turned himself over to police authorities. Schoen stressed that the scene is still active, as it will take time to process the scene. Joseph Geske, 28, of Manhattan was arrested in the 3000 block of Anderson Ave. on January 3, 2017 at approximately 10:40 PM. Geske was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for aggravated battery. Geske was issued a bond of $20,000.00 causing him to remain confined at the time of this report.

An overnight fire resulted in no injuries but caused $175,000 in losses to an apartment house in Manhattan, authorities said Thursday morning. The fire was reported at 2:22 a.m. at a house at 600 Osage St., about three blocks north of the city’s downtown area. Upon their arrival, crews found a three-story apartment house with smoke and fire coming out of the second floor. Of the estimated dollar loss, $100,000 was to the structure and $75,000 was to its contents. According to the Manhattan Fire Department, the building’s owner is listed as KAT Property Management in Shawnee.

Appointed by President Kirk Schulz in 2010 as director of community relations and assistant to the president, Hartman was later named chief of staff. A woman living in exile after spending two years as president of the east African country of Malawi is speaking at Kansas State University. Joyce Banda’s Jan 29 appearance is open to the public. Banda was the Republic of Malawi’s first female president from 2012 through 2014. She has also been a women’s rights activist, entrepreneur, educator and lawmaker.
