TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Two separate Kansas legislative committees have approved proposals from Republican Gov. Sam Brownback to provide an additional $17 million to the state’s two mental hospitals. The decisions Thursday by the House Appropriations Committee and the Senate Ways and Means Committee mean both chambers will consider the spending as part of broader budget legislation next week. The extra funds will provide pay raises and offset lost federal funds over the next 15 months. Police in Riley County arrested Colby Gant, 27, of Council Grove, Kansas on April 21, 2016 at approximately 12:40 PM. He was at the Riley County Police Department at the time of this arrest on the offense of several crimes related to drugs. Gant was arrested on the offenses of possession of a hallucinogenic drug, possession of an opiate, opium, or narcotic drug, as well as theft of property or services, use or possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia, criminal use of a financial card, and criminal damage to property. A Manhattan man will serve nearly three years in prison on charges which include burglary and forgery. Brian Duzan was sentenced to 32 months in Pottawatomie County Court Thursday for burglary, with an eight month sentence for forgery, and some county time on misdemeanors–all to serve concurrently. Duzan was taken into custody after a nine hour search January sixth with police finding him in the ceiling at All American Garage Doors and Windows at 503 Lincoln in Wamego, where the burglary occurred.
The City of Manhattan discussed possible improvements to CiCo Park with Riley County commissioners Thursday morning. Manhattan Parks and Recreation director Eddie Eastes and Jason Hilgers, the deputy city manager, outlined some of the improvements looked at in the city’s latest Parks and Recreation Facility Feasibility Study and what role the county could play in future enhancements. For CiCo Park, which is jointly owned and managed by the City of Manhattan, USD 383 and Riley County, Hilgers said improvements to the pool there could include a larger indoor aquatic center. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office continues to search for individuals charged with illegal drug violations from an incident on March 26th. At about 7:16 a.m. that day Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the Wamego Police Department executed a search warrant in a hotel room at a Wamego Motel, on Highway 24. Deputies seized unspecified quantities of methamphetamine, marijuana, as well as drug paraphernalia and scales. The occupants of the room had left prior to the search warrant however warrants have been issued for the suspects. TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Transportation has announced delays for two categories of road projects scheduled for 2017 and 2018. State Budget Director, Shawn Sullivan outlined the changes Wednesday. Previously-programmed modernization and expansion projects are being delayed until remaining State Highway Fund revenues allow for them or new money becomes available. 2017 delays will include ten projects with an estimated construction cost of $273.5 million; 2018 will see 15 projects delayed with a cost of $279.2 million. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Authorities have booked into jail a 28-year-old man who has been identified as a person of interest in a sexually battery at a Wichita high school. The Wichita Eagle reports that the man is being held on suspicion of multiple charges, including sexual battery and criminal discharge of a firearm. Jail records show the man was booked into jail Wednesday and is being held on a $65,000 bond. Authorities began investigating in September after an 18-year-old student told administrators that a stranger approached her in Wichita East High School and asked her where the gym was located.…
MCPHERSON, Kan. (AP) A Wichita businessman has established a $1 million endowment that will provide a new music series and a student scholarship at McPherson College. The Salina Journal reports that Steve Clark is using the endowment at the central Kansas school to honor his mother, Fern Lingenfelter. The music series will include two annual music performance events with special emphasis on piano. It will be followed by the creation of the Fern Lingenfelter Scholarship in Music, an annual merit-based scholarship for one or more McPherson students majoring in music.
