City Commissioners accepted the ballot language for a tax increase question Tuesday night, as presented by public works director Robert Ott. The question asks for approval of the imposition of a new retailer’s sales tax in the amount of 0.20% to fund street maintenance and the city’s safe routes to school program. TOPEKA — After he became Kansas governor in 2011, Sam Brownback slashed taxes on the promise that the cuts would trigger a furious wave of business expansion. But the “shot of adrenaline” hasn’t worked as envisioned, and the state budget remains in crisis. Now many of the same Republicans who helped pass Brownback’s plan are in revolt, refusing to help the governor cut spending after tax collections missed projections. TOPEKA — A top Kansas social services official has outlined proposals for nearly $17 million in additional spending at the state’s two mental hospitals. Department for Aging and Disability Services Interim Secretary Tim Keck discussed the proposals Monday during a meeting of a legislative oversight committee on social services. Keck said he’s asking Gov. Sam Brownback’s budget staff to include the spending in his proposals for legislators to consider. Officers with the Riley County Police Department arrested Rodney Roberts, 48, of Manhattan for the offense of violation of a protection order (X2) and criminal trespass. He was given no bond at the time of his arrest which took place in the 700 block of Tuttle Street in Manhattan. Due to the nature of this arrest and crime further information has not been released. At the time of this report Roberts was confined at the Riley County Jail. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Amtrak says it will use buses to connect people in Wichita with its trains in Oklahoma City and Newton. Several state and local officials announced the bus connection Monday, providing the first Amtrak service in Wichita since 1979. The Wichita Eagle reports  one bus route will connect with Amtrak’s Southwest Chief in Newton while another route will connect with the Heartland Eagle in Oklahoma City. The Amtrak connection will run daily out of the Greyhound station in downtown Wichita. POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY, Kan. – The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in solving a rash of arson fires in the 22000 block of Godlove Road. The Onaga arsons were reported on April 14, after 80 acres of native grass and brome pastures were lit on fire without landowner permission early this month and in late March. Police believe the suspect or suspects could be traveling in a vehicle starting fires along roadside ditches. LENEXA, Kan. (AP) A suburban Kansas City nonprofit has sent an official team to Ecuador to determine what type of medical assistance the group can provide in the wake of the deadly earthquake. Rescuers pulled survivors from rubble Sunday after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit Ecuador, killing at least 238 people and injuring more than 1,500. Jim Mitchum, CEO of Lenexa-based Heart to Heart International, said Sunday his organization has sent a three-member advance team to Quito, Ecuador. NEWTON, Kan. (AP) Another Kansas school district is considering charging parents for all-day kindergarten. KSNW-TV reports that the Newton district in south-central Kansas is looking into a $200-a-month charge. Half-day kindergarten would remain free because the state funds it. Newton Superintendent Deborah Hamm says expenses are rising with no new money. She says districts can’t continue to do the same things with fewer resources. Newton parent Ashley Horchem says the proposal is “frustrating” and that “education shouldn’t be that costly at a young age.” But Hamm says there are no other areas to trim the budget.
