Laynie Perez, 18, of Manhattan, was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for attempted aggravated robbery and aggravated assault. Total bond was set at $25,000. The apprehension stems from an incident that occurred in April of this year where a female was shot in the abdomen in Manhattan, Kansas. Perez was confined at the time of this report. An early morning accident on I-70 in Dickinson County Wednesday left a Herington man injured. The Kansas Highway Patrol reports a 2023 International semi driven by Travis P. Williams, of Wellington, was westbound on Interstate 70 one and one half miles west of Fair Road when it rear-ended a 2011 Chevy Cruze driven by 19-year old Koy E Mueller, who was stopped in the right lane. EMS transported Mueller to Wesley Medical Center. Williams was not injured.
Residents of Pottawatomie County are advised that landowners in the area have observed the presence of blue-green algae in their privately-owned ponds. Conditions may be favorable for other algae blooms to form in ponds on nearby properties, and this can be dangerous for both humans, livestock and pets. If a landowner suspects that blue-green algae is present in a pond, the best thing to do is to stay out of the water, and to prevent livestock, pets and children from entering the infected water. The Geary County Schools USD 475 Board of Education recently approved the hiring of Amanda Cunningham and Lisa Ledbetter to assistant principal positions within the district for the 2024-25 school year. Cunningham will take over as an assistant principal at Seitz Elementary during the 2024-25 school year after teaching fifth grade for the Dragons this past school year. Ledbetter will be an assistant principal this fall after moving to USD 475 from Virginia where she worked as a mathematics tutor at Fairfax County Public Schools in 2024.
Riley County police were investigating the theft of outdoor equipment from a Manhattan business. The theft was reported around 7:22 p.m. Tuesday from the Bomgaars store at 427 Hummels Place. Riley County police said two unknown people left the establishment with two chainsaws and one weed eater without paying for them. The total estimated loss associated with this report was $1,030. The unemployment rate once again rose in the month of June. Preliminary reports by the Labor Market division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show an adjusted unemployment rate of 3.1% in June. This is an increase from 2.9% in May and an increase from 2.6% in June of 2023. The unemployment rate in Riley County is up from 3 percent in May to 4 percent in June. The rate in Geary County is also up from from 4.2 to 5 percent. Pottawatomie and Wabaunsee Counties also saw an uptick in their unemployment rates.…
