The 1st Combat Aviation Brigade in Fort Riley will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday at 10 a.m. for the newly completed Gray Eagle hangar. The state-of-the-art facility houses the unmanned aircraft operated by the “Phoenix” company, a virtual training simulator and the Ground Control Station where operators can control the Gray Eagles throughout the recently expanded air corridor between Fort Riley and the Smoky Hill gunnery complex near Salina. Winter has been principal at Wamego High School for 6 years. Prior to that he served as a principal at Blue Valley High/Middle School in USD 384. The Kansas Department of Transportation is hosting a public open house to review recommendations for the improvement of the K-99 corridor from I-70 north to the Kansas River Bridge in Wamego in Wabaunsee County on Tuesday, May 3rd. The public is invited to drop by the open house-style meeting anytime between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. that evening at the Wamego Area Senior Citizens Center at 501 Ash Street in Wamego.  KDOT and consultant staff will be on hand to answer questions about the project. “Deja vu” is the way Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen describes the latest sales tax numbers released Tuesday. The April sales tax receipts indicate $838,056 collected in Manhattan, compared to $845,877 last year at this same time. However the April figures are still above the same time frame two years prior to that. $779,560 was collected in April of 2013 and $806,747 in 2014. The negative budget impact for the month is $17,887, and $81,576 less for the total budget so far this year.

WICHITA — A government report shows the Kansas winter wheat crop is maturing at a faster rate than usual. The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that 23 percent of the state’s wheat crop was already headed. That is ahead of the 15 percent that would be average for this time of year. It also rates wheat condition as 2 percent very poor, 9 percent poor and 36 percent fair. About 48 percent is rated as good and 5 percent as excellent. OKLAHOMA CITY — Officials have removed aircraft from a Kansas military base to prevent them from being damaged during expected heavy storms. McConnell Air Force Base spokesman Colby Hardin says the aircraft are being sent to Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington, and Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota. The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, is forecasting severe storms with the possibility of tornadoes and large hail Tuesday, including in the Wichita area. Officers with the Riley County Police Department arrested Susan Rodriguez, 26, of Manhattan on April 25, 2016 at approximately 5:55 PM. Rodriguez was arrested while in the 1400 block of Houston Street on the offense of failure to appear listed on a warrant that originated in Geary County, Kansas. This warrant had a bond of $5,000.00 and at the time of this report she was confined at the Riley County Jail.
