TOPEKA — Kansas legislators have voted to override Republican Gov. Sam Brownback’s veto of a bill that would repeal or roll back past income tax cuts he has championed. The House voted 88-31 Tuesday night to overturn Brownback’s veto of a bill that will increase income taxes to fix the state budget and provide additional funds for public schools. Supporters had four votes more than the two-thirds majority necessary to override a veto. The Senate earlier voted 27-13 to override, exactly a two-thirds majority. The findings from the 2017 Community Survey administered to Manhattan residents this spring suggests the community is ready to vote “yes” on a quarter-cent quality-of-life sales tax issue on the November ballot. On Tuesday evening, Manhattan City Commissioners heard the findings of the survey which was administered to 2,500 homes this spring. Dr. Josephine Gatti Schafer, an assistant professor of political science at Kansas State University, began writing the survey in December of last year with city staff. The survey was sent out through mail in March and made available online. It elicited 604 responses for a 24% response rate, Schafer said. An overwhelming majority…

WICHITA — Police say a child who was hospitalized in critical condition after being found in a hot car in Wichita is improving. Sgt. Jesse Hancock says the girl and her siblings apparently were playing hide and seek Monday before her father found her in the car. The Wichita Eagle reports police spokesman Officer Paul Cruz said Tuesday investigators are still trying to determine what happened. The girl’s condition was improving Tuesday but no other details were released. A Manhattan truck driver was sentenced to 12 months in the Riley County Jail for vehicular homicide. Ethan Butts, 21, was involved in a three-vehicle accident on Feb. 13, 2016, that took the life of 30-year-old Jenna Lindsten of Manhattan. The accident happened at the intersection of Tuttle Creek Boulevard and Marlatt Avenue. Butts was the driver of a semi-truck that ran a red light and struck Lindsten’s car, causing it to spin into northbound lanes and hit a pickup driven by 42-year-old Quinton Huncovsky, another Manhattan resident. KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The family of a former Pittsburg State college football player who killed himself in 2014 is suing the NCAA, questioning the governing body’s handling of concussions including more than 100 they say factored into Zack Langston’s death. The federal lawsuit filed Friday in Kansas City, Kansas, also accuses the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association of negligence.
