CHENEY — A volunteer Kansas firefighter has been hospitalized after he collapsed while working to extinguish a weekend grass fire. The Cheney Volunteer Fire Department says the 48-year-old firefighter became unresponsive Sunday afternoon while he was operating a water truck used to battle the blaze. Cheney Fire Chief Brad Ewy told KAKE-TV the firefighter suffered a brain bleed. The man’s name hasn’t been released. He’s been in critical condition at a Wichita hospital. Ewy says he’s been a volunteer firefighter and EMT for seven years and that a fund has been set up to help the firefighter and his family.

WICHITA — Gov. Sam Brownback’s administration is moving forward with a policy change that would make it harder for transgender people to change their gender on their birth certificates. The Wichita Eagle reports that under current regulations, one can change the gender listed on his or her birth certificate by showing medical paperwork that indicates an anatomical or physiological change occurred. The governor’s administration has proposed changing the regulations so that the gender on a person’s birth certificate can only be changed if the person signs an affidavit saying the gender was incorrectly recorded on the original certificate and also provides medical…

Dr. Jill Biden, wife of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, was in Fort Riley Tuesday and made a stop at the middle school Wednesday morning to talk with students, teachers, parents and local leaders about education in the military — especially for children of military members. On Monday, April 11, weather permitting, an intersection improvement project will begin at the U.S. 24 and Flush Road junction in Pottawatomie County. Project work includes the addition of turning and acceleration lanes on U.S. 24 and a turn lane on Flush Road. Work will take place during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with some occasional Saturday work. Beginning on Monday, April 11, westbound U.S. 24 on either side of the Flush Road intersection will be reduced to one open lane for construction of the new lanes. Officers with the Riley County Police Department filed a report and are now investigating the offense of rape and aggravated indecent liberties with a child victim who is listed as being 4 years of age (female). These crimes occurred in the city limits of Manhattan in January of this year and involved a suspect who is known to the victim (male in his 20s). The Wamego City Commission is moving forward on making City Hall a secure facility. At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page reviewed the proposal from Architect Bruce McMillan after a special meeting to go over the plans of the proposal. Page said McMillan mentioned doing a construction management project rather than a design build, due to the specialized products used in the project. Page said this would deviate from the City’s normal bid process, but could still be in compliance by the pre-qualification of the design specifications, the contractors and sub-contractors.
