By Emma Loura/Manhattan Mercury The Riley County Fair is coming to town, bringing the lights and thrills of the carnival and saddling up for the rodeo. The fair runs July 25-29 in CiCo Park. The event will feature a carnival by WEEE Entertainment and the Kaw Valley Rodeo at Wells Arena. This year’s fair will feature a scone-baking contest and many exhibits featuring animals, plants, crops and the arts, both fine and practical. The carnival starts at 6 p.m. on all five days. Story by Emma Loura / The Manhattan Mercury: Drivers heading into Riley from the east will need to start hitting the brakes a bit sooner. The Riley County commission on Monday approved a request to lower the speed limit on Kansas Avenue east of Riley from 45 mph to 30 mph and place a flashing light there to alert drivers to slow down. The decrease will affect the stretch of Kansas Avenue between the town’s eastern limit to a spot 500 feet east of Pheasant Ridge Road. By Beth Day/Times of Pott County Pottawatomie County on Monday approved a $1,968,189.60 bid from Bridges Inc. to replace the deteriorating Louisville Rd. Bridge. The road has been closed to through traffic since May 2023. Tim Eisenbarth, public works director, told commissioners he had reviewed all the documents before making his recommendation. He also said he went a little further on looking into the company since the county had not worked with them in the past. “We’ve not done business with them,” he said. “But they are a good company.” He added he checked with the Kansas Turnpike Authority, KDOT…

A fire broke out earlier this morning at Ackert Hall early on Monday on the campus of Kansas State University. Manhattan Fire Department crews responded to the structure fire and were able to extinguish it within ten minutes. Claflin Road was shut down for nearly an hour but ultimately reopened with no issues. The fire was believed to have been started by a light fixture. Crews reported no injuries or fatalities but the building did experience quite a bit of smoke. Details continue to emerge with this story and more information will be released later today.
