More than 200 Soldiers with the 1st Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade are set to return soon from a nine-month deployment to Kuwait. While deployed, the brigade’s Soldiers were responsible for planning, oversight and resources for troops in five countries and 13 locations. The brigade supported Operation Inherent Resolve and provided sustainment support to U.S. Central Command across its area of responsibility. The unit departed Fort Riley in June 2015. All members of the “Durable” brigade are expected to be home by the end of March.

The Riley County Police Department has plans for a proposed service building expansion, but what wasn’t planned was the cost estimate of such a project. WICHITA — The American Civil Liberties Union is challenging a Kansas law requiring proof of citizenship when people register to vote at state motor vehicle offices. A federal lawsuit filed Thursday contends the documents requirement violates the National Voter Registration Act, a federal law that aims to increase voter participation by eligible citizens. That law is sometimes called the “Motor-Voter Law” because of a provision requiring states to provide voter registration services in conjunction with drivers’ license applications. Riley County Police will soon be stepping up traffic safety efforts in area school zones. Beginning on February 29th and ending March 13th, officers will join Law Enforcement agencies across Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma in a traffic safety operation, working to reduce teen driver related fatalities and collisions. To try and alter this trend, law enforcement across these states will be increasing vigilance when patrolling area schools zones – taking appropriate action with drivers and passengers who refuse to obey traffic laws. Lauren Hess, 25, of Manhattan was arrested while in the 600 block of Poyntz Ave. on February 17, 2016 at approximately 1:00 PM. This arrest came after police received reports of a vehicle that was not operating safely and had been involved in a collision with a curb. This tip led to the arrest which included the offenses of driving while under the influence, endangering a child, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident. RCPD confirmed that an infant child was inside the vehicle at the time of this incident. Hess was given a bond of $2,500.00…

A Manhattan man was injured in a two vehicle accident on I-70 in Wabaunsee County Wednesday night.  Collin Wood, 22, was taken to Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan following the accident, reported at about 8:30 p.m.,  1.5 miles east of K-99. The Kansas Highway Patrol indicates Wood was westbound in a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup when his vehicle collided with a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria disabled in the right lane and unoccupied. Wood’s pickup left the roadway and entered the north ditch. Wood was wearing a seat belt.

Manhattan/Ogden USD 383 school board members heard several new and continuing reports throughout their meeting Wednesday evening. Dr. Mike Ribble, the district’s Director of Technology, presented an annual technology plan to board members. Dr. Lucas Shivers, Director of Elementary Education, also brought elementary-level educators into the meeting to relay results of work by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Waiting throughout this meeting were over a dozen parents and student athletes from Manhattan High School.
