Sales tax numbers were down in January in Manhattan. The latest report from the office of state treasurer Ron Estes shows the Little Apple took in $888,302 in sales tax revenue, compared to $928,134 in January 2015. December sales tax revenue took in $931,578 for Manhattan. Bernie Hayen, the City of Manhattan’s director of finance, said in an email with the report that most retail sectors were part of the decline. HAYS — A winter storm has dumped up to 8 inches of snow across part of western Kansas and made some roads impassable. The Kansas Department of Transportation is reporting that sections of Interstate 70, U.S. 40, U.S. 36 and Kansas 27 were closed Tuesday near the Colorado border. The agency says many roads in northwest Kansas are packed with snow and icy. National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Husted says 6 to 8 inches of snow has been reported across a large swath of northwest Kansas. A report for burglary and other offenses was filed in the 200 block of 12th Street in Ogden, Kansas on January 31, 2016 and police made an arrest the following day. Officers arrested William Weber, 26, of Berryton, Kansas on the offenses of theft by deception, making false information, and criminal use of a financial card. Weber was arrested while in the 200 block of 12th Street on February 1, 2016 at approximately 12:00 PM. He was given a bond of $10,000.00 and at the time of this report was confined at the Riley County Jail. Police found that several…

A 27-year-old Manhattan man has entered a plea of no contest to two counts of rape. Gregory E. Hoyt entered the plea before Riley County District Court Chief Judge Meryl Wilson Monday afternoon. Sentencing is set for March 21st. Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson indicates both crimes carry a potential life sentence. As previously announced by KMAN, the Riley County Police Department took the 27-year-old Hoyt into custody last August after receiving reports of inappropriate behavior between Hoyt and a child he knew. He was arrested in the northwestern portion of Manhattan.

The mascot of Manhattan High has been the Indians for over 75 years now, and since its’ inception has been no stranger to controversy. A local group in Manhattan held their inaugural meeting last week in hopes to do away with the mascot that many people may find offensive. Duke Prentup, the son of former coach Frank Prentup, got in touch with KMAN to share his thoughts and opinions on the mascot which was intended to honor his father. Prentrup was a beloved coach at Manhattan High who was referred to as “Chief” due to his heritage in the Tuscarora tribe.…

TOPEKA — Kansas is reporting that it collected about $7 million less in taxes than anticipated in January, with corporate income and sales taxes falling short of expectations. Monday’s report of a shortfall came as legislative budget committees prepared to discuss proposals for closing a projected shortfall approaching $200 million in the budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1. The Department of Revenue says the state collected $535 million in taxes last month instead of the $542 million projected in a November fiscal forecast. The shortfall is 1.3 percent. The suspect in a shooting that took place in Manhattan’s Aggieville district over the summer, was in Riley County Court Monday afternoon. Mark Self Jr., sat before a judge and jury as his defense team, along with that of the state made their opening arguments. 31-year-old Self allegedly shot 26-year-old Kevin Green of Manhattan in the 600 block of North 12th Street in May of 2015. A second victim, 19-year-old Jeremy Caudill, sustained minor injury as a result of the incident. Riley County commissioners were updated on recent crime trends Monday morning. Riley County Police Department Capt. Josh Kyle told commissioners burglaries have decreased so far in 2016 after trending upward in November and December. “At the end of 2015 we did not have a good news to report as far as crime trends,” he said. “We saw a significant increase in burglaries towards the end of the year, which had a significant effect on our overall averages. “I am glad to report that in the beginning of this year we’re not seeing that trend continue.” Kyle said the department has…
