Sales tax in Manhattan will rise .2 percent Saturday. Manhattan voters passed the increase in the November election with 65 percent in favor. The increase will generate an extra $2 million for the city annually. Those funds will go to street repairs and the city’s Safe Routes to School program. The increase puts Manhattan’s sales tax at 8.95 percent and will sunset after 10 years.

A Manhattan state senator told KMAN he is optimistic the legislature can override the latest veto from the governor. “I’m hoping and thinking we’ll get the 27 votes to take care of our constituents,” Sen. A docked boat that broke loose due to rising river waters caused quite the commotion near the lunch hour on Thursday, according to a press release from the Manhattan Fire Department. At 10:51 a.m. MFD was dispatched to the area of Pillsbury Drive and Linear Trail for a report of an out of control boat with two male occupants. The original report placed the boat on the Kansas River behind Aldi’s. Boats from MFD and the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office searched the area and were able to find an empty boat on the river. TOPEKA — Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback has vetoed a bill that would have extended the state’s health coverage for the poor under former President Barack Obama’s signature health care law. The conservative Republican governor made the move Thursday. He explained that he thinks the expansion would fail to serve the truly needy and would burden the state with what he called “unrestrainable entitlement costs.” The bill would have expanded Medicaid coverage to as many as 180,000 additional adults. Officers listed Shengming Wang, 26, of Manhattan, as the victim when he reported that an unknown suspect cut the lock off of his storage unit and took 50 pairs of Nike shoes. Riley County Police are investigating a reported hit and run injury accident Wednesday night. Officers responded to a report of an injury accident on I-70 at approximately mile marker 316 Wednesday shortly after 10 p.m. When officers arrived on scene, they found a black 1991 Mazda Protege, driven by Javier Gali-Rodriguez, 30, of Junction City, had been struck from behind by an unknown white truck pulling a trailer, causing the Protege to be pushed into a ditch and rolling twice before coming to rest on its roof. Two injury accidents were reported in Geary County Wednesday, with at least one attributed to slick road conditions.  Elijah Lewis, 25, of Fort Riley and  Kody Seiler, 19, of California were both taken to Geary Community Hospital following a Wednesday evening accident on I-70 near the westbound Fort Riley exit. Lewis was driving a 1990 Nissan Skyline eastbound on I-70 when the vehicle hydroplaned and struck a guardrail, re-entered the roadway where it was struck by a Mack Diesel truck towing three trailers.  Seiler was a passenger in Lewis’s vehicle. Fifteen members of a new committee set on discussing the Manhattan High School mascot sat down face-to-face for their inaugural meeting on Wednesday at the Robinson Education Center. The group was formed nearly four months ago when the Manhattan-Ogden board voted to retain the mascot at a meeting on Dec. 7 of last year. The committee has until September to solve four prerequisite issues and possibly recommend to board members for the mascot to be changed.
