A Westmoreland man has been bound over to stand trial on attempted second degree murder and aggravated battery charges. Travis Conder’s preliminary hearing was continued in Pottawatomie County District Court Wednesday after taking longer than anticipated in early November. The court Wednesday denied the defendant’s motion for immunity based on a right of self defense after evidence was presented. Conder’s arraignment is set for January 22nd. Conder was arrested in August after a shooting in Westmoreland. The Riley County Police Department has been made aware of what’s described as a very concerning scam involving a fraudulent caller who threatens community members and demands money. According to reports the caller will state that they have taken a family member hostage and that you must send money for their release. In one instance background noise was also produced that made it appear that the family member was present and may be in immediate distress. In another instance it appears that the scammers may have temporarily occupied the family member’s telephone so that the victim would be unable to contact them.…
Florence Manufacturing has implemented a reduction in force, involving 80 permanent positions. Marketing Manager Donna Logback tells KMAN the company announced the lay-offs to employees Tuesday. Logback says the reduction is due to a major client of Florence suspending a program. She adds they expect to maintain just over 300 permanent positions moving forward. Florence Manufacturing, which is located in the Business Park behind the Manhattan Regional Airport, is the largest centralized delivery mailbox manufacturer in the country.
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Kansas Board of Regents panel appears ready to advance a plan governing how to allow concealed weapons on the state’s college campuses by mid-2017. The board’s four-member governance committee was to discuss the newest draft Wednesday morning in Topeka, Kansas. In Kansas, gun owners can carry concealed weapons without a license. And public universities in Kansas must allow concealed weapons on campus beginning in July 2017 in buildings that don’t have security measures including metal detectors. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Topeka police are looking for a person of interest in the death of a 24-year-old man. Police said Tuesday that officers searching for the person of interest obtained search warrants for two residences. But the officers who searched the residences weren’t able to locate the 25-year-old man. The man is wanted for questioning in the investigation into the death of Terrin Holloway, of Topeka. Police said that officers were dispatched Sunday afternoon and found Holloway’s body in a vehicle that was stopped in the middle of a street. A police news release describes the death as a…

The Wamego City Commission is preparing for 2016. At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page reviewed the City’s Merit Wage Plan that’s been in place for a few years, and asked the Commission to continue the plan into 2016. Page said for a number of years, merit based pay was based solely on evaluations. This plan was amended for non-salaried employees to grant a cost-of living increase of 25 cents per hour on January 1st. These non-salaried employees would also be eligible for a 1.5-to-2.5 percent merit increase based solely on performance evaluations on their anniversary date. The remaining employees are…
