The Wamego Area Chamber of Commerce officially announced Thursday that Daryn Soldan has been named as the new Executive Director effective June 20th. A news release indicates Soldan brings with him a wealth of small business consultation knowledge and prior Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development experience. He joins the Wamego Area Chamber of Commerce from his prior position as a small business consultant with the Kansas Small Business Development Center where he served a six county region partnering with local Chambers of Commerce and Economic Development entities to provide education and consultation with local business owners and prospective entrepreneurs. A Manhattan man was taken to a Topeka hospital following an accident in the 12-hundred block of Zeandale about a mile and a half east of K-177 Wednesday evening. Jeffery Jepsen, 29, was driving a 2007 Nissan 350-Z westbound on Zeandale when for an unknown reason the Nissan crossed the center line, left the roadway and overturned, ejecting the driver. Jepsen was taken to Stormont Vail in Topeka where he is reported to be in critical care. The accident was reported at 7:30 p.m.

Former K-State quarterback Michael Bishop has been nominated for the College Football Hall of Fame. Bishop is one of 75 players and six coaches listed on the Hall of Fame’s 2017 ballot. Players including Peyton Manning, Tony Gonzalez, Eric Crouch, Troy Polamalu, Brian Urlacher, Marshall Faulk, Eric Dickerson, Tim Couch, Matt Leinart and Ray Lewis. The six coaches nominated: Jim Carlen, Pete Cawthon Sr., Danny Ford, Billy Jack Murphy, Darryl Rogers, Steve Spurrier. Game one on Friday, Sept. 2 at Stanford will kickoff at 8 p.m. local and will be televised on FS1. The structure fire that occurred at 801 Moro Street early Thursday morning has been ruled incendiary by fire investigators. Investigators from the Manhattan Fire Department, the Riley County Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Kansas Office of the State Fire Marshal  conducted the origin and cause investigation. Officials are now investigating this fire as arson. It was determined that there was a high probability that it was set intentionally by an unknown subject(s). Danny Duffy pitched six effective innings and rookie Whit Merrifield had two hits and scored a run as the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-3 on Wednesday night to complete a 6-0 homestand. Clouds of uncertainty are settling in over USD 383 following a Supreme Court ruling and an impending political battle in Topeka. The Supreme Court is threatening to shut down public schools on July 1 if the Kansas legislatures do not adhere to the ruling of Gannon v. Kansas,which demands the state supply an additional $39 million to schools for the upcoming fiscal year. “I would hope alarm bells are going off in Topeka,” Superintendent Bob Shannon remarked at Wednesday night’s board meeting. Topeka – Although Kansas collected $69.2 million more than the previous fiscal year to date, total tax receipts through May were $5.1 billion or $73.8 million less than estimates. Individual income tax receipts for May were $58 million less than expected while corporate income tax receipts were $15 million below estimates.
