LAWRENCE — The University Senate at the University of Kansas wants the school’s search for a new chancellor to be more transparent. The board on Thursday unanimously approved a resolution seeking public presentations and question-and-answer sessions with each finalist for the chancellor’s job. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the statement also urges the Kansas Board of Regents to include representatives of the university’s peer-elected student, faculty and staff senates on the chancellor search committee. A Manhattan man charged with first degree murder and child abuse appeared in the Riley County District Court for his preliminary hearing Friday afternoon. Andrew Gibson, 25, was in court in his orange Riley County Jail jumpsuit in front of Judge Sheila Hochhauser. His previous appearances have been via webcam from the county jail. Gibson is charged with the death of 3-month-old Serenity Reich, who was found unresponsive on May 5 in Gibson’s apartment on the 500 block of Stone Creek Drive in Manhattan after he called 911. Police in Riley County are searching for a juvenile who was reported as missing from his home on October 21st, 2016.  RCPD is currently seeking information on the whereabouts of Kobi Scroggin, 16, of Manhattan, Kansas.  Anyone with information should contact the department immediately by phone (785-537-2112) or by using the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers (785-539-7777). Several Kansas Department of Corrections inmates with area convictions are up for public comment sessions in the next few months, including three people convicted in a 1997 Riley County murder.   Delisha Branch, 45, Duereal Campbell, 36, and Shakeer Davis, 37, were convicted in connection with the February 1997 murder of Wanda Norman, 44, of Manhattan at Norman’s home at Countryside Estates. One student’s trick turned into an abundance of treats for students at Kansas State University. It may be November, but students were able to chow down on Kit Kat bars Thursday afternoon on the lawn in front of Haymaker Hall. A viral tweet from a freshman student inspired the candy manufacturer to come to campus and share more than 6,000 of their candy bars. TOPEKA — A Wichita man born in 1967 on a U.S. Air Force installation in Germany will be able to vote after he was certified as a U.S. citizen. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the state Election Board made the decision Wednesday after hearing from Dale Weber. It was the fifth time the board convened to sort out a citizenship challenge related to voting eligibility. The high-level examination process followed imposition of rigid standards tied to citizenship for people registering to vote in Kansas. EMPORIA — Students at Emporia State University are expressing their opposition to guns on campus. The Emporia Gazette reports that The Associated Student Government has released a resolution against guns on campus. The group’s president Elijah Williams says a recent survey shows that an overwhelming number of students on campus are opposed to allowing guns on their school grounds. The Personal and Family Protection Act was approved by the Legislature, authorizing concealed carry in state and municipal buildings, including state university buildings. MOUNDRIDGE — Authorities in central Kansas are searching for two people now accused in connection with a triple homicide. Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton says in a posting on his department’s Facebook page that 35-year-old Jereme Nelson and 31-year-old Myrta Rangel are charged in arrest warrants with capital murder and three counts of first-degree murder. Their bond has been set at $1 million each, and the sheriff’s department believes they are in Oklahoma.
