A Kansas Department of Corrections inmate serving time for several Geary County charges including first degree murder apparently has been passed over for parole. 44-year-old Mikel Dreiling’s next possible earliest release date is now December of 2018. Dreiling was convicted in connection with a prominent Geary County murder case in 1994, with public comment sessions in October and possible parole this month. The KDOC website recently updated his status with the December 2018 date. He’s being held in the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. Dreiling and his sister Dana Flynn were sentenced in early 1997 in the shooting death of Randall Sheridan.…

A special work session at the Robinson Education Center brought some special guests to the table preceding Wednesday’s USD 383 board of education meeting. The Capitol Building will be bustling with the energy of a new session in just three weeks, and board members had the opportunity to discuss school finance with the elected officials representing Manhattan at the state level. Kansas State overcame a cold start with a 19-1 run to finish the first half of a 67-54 victory over Gardner-Webb Wednesday night, sending the Wildcats to their best start under coach Bruce Weber. The Wamego City Commission opened the last meeting of 2016 with a Public Hearing.  At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page reviewed the petition for the Hearing at the request of Bluestem Electric.  The Public Hearing was to vacate a street (Shanote Lane) for development in the eastern most part of the Industrial Park.   With no opposition, a motion was made to approve the ordinance by a vote of 5 to 0.  “After Burn” is the name of an emergency preparedness exercise led by the Kansas Department of Agriculture this week with a foot and mouth disease outbreak scenario. Kansas Department of Agriculture Secretary Jackie McClaskey spoke with K-MAN during this week’s four day state-wide exercise, which was testing responses to just such a scenario with an additional pretend isolated ice storm in southeast Kansas. Several rooms on two floors of the KDA building in Manhattan were occupied by exercise participants–with a new addition this year according to McClaskey. A man and woman who evaded police were apprehended late Tuesday night after they crashed their vehicle and fled on foot near I-70 by McDowell Creek Road. According to a press release from the Geary County Sheriff’s Office, authorities arrested 35-year-old Joshua Garcia of Biloxi, Miss., and 31-year-old Jamieson Townsend of Blue Springs, Mo. After their arrest it was found that the two were suspects in a string of pawn shop burglaries and robberies in the state of Mississippi — as well as suspects in a triple homicide robbery of a pawn shop in Jackson, Miss. DERBY — A southern Kansas woman who lost her hands and feet during a robbery got an early Christmas gift new electronic hands worth $260,000, courtesy of a businessman and his wife. Julie Dombo of Derby showed off her new hands publicly Tuesday with her husband, a day after receiving them as a present from Koch Industries’ general counsel Mark Holden and his wife. Dombo met Holden in October at a Wichita Crime Commission awards banquet. TOPEKA — Child-care providers in Kansas say a state proposal to increase by several hours the training they must receive could mean parents they serve will have to pay more. The providers made that argument Tuesday during a hearing over the proposed Kansas Department of Health and Environment regulations. The department’s plan would raise to 16 the number of hours of annual in-service training for primary care providers, who directly supervise and interact with children.
