A number of arrests occurred over the past few days. Firstly, a 35-year-old Blue Rapids woman was apprehended Friday.  Debra Schrater was arrested in Blue Rapids, on a warrant for extradition with “no bond” from Ogden, Utah. RCPD arrested 37-year-old Chad Russell Saturday.  The Manhattan man was located in the 900 block of Hayes Drive and charged with the offense of probation violation, which was listed on a warrant with a bond of $10,000.00. The original offense on this warrant was possession of methamphetamine. BURLINGTON — Crews have completed the first phase of a large-scale dredging project at an eastern Kansas reservoir. The Emporia Gazette reports that the John Redmond Reservoir dredging project, which began in May, involves dredging sediment from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir, which is a supply source to 19 communities and six industrial users. The dredging project began after a study determined the water supply needs in the region could not be sustained during a 1950s-like drought, and dredging up the sediment to restore water supply storage was the best option. Manhattan – Over the weekend, runners got on their marks to raise money for local philanthropic organization, Shepherd’s Crossing. C. Clyde Run is in its 5th year as the organization’s main fundraising event. Through an increase in sponsorship and participation, the fundraiser is close to reaching $100,000 in its 5 year existence. A Grandview Plaza man was arrested for charges related to critical injuries suffered by a 2-month-old female infant, according to a press release sent Friday by the Grandview Plaza Police Department. Police arrested Brigham Bailey, 33, on Oct. 20 for aggravated battery and interference with law enforcement. The GPPD said on Oct. 16 at about 4:22 p.m., an ambulance was dispatched to the 800 block of Janice Street in Grandview Plaza for an infant who was not breathing. SALINA — The Rolling Hills Zoo near Salina has announced that it is preparing for the birth of a baby giraffe. The Salina Journal reports that Zuri, a 6-year-old giraffe, is pregnant. The baby giraffe is expected to arrive in late November or early December. The gestation period for giraffes can last up to 15 months, and newborns can weigh close to 150 pounds and be 6 feet tall. The name and sex of the newborn giraffe will be determined at birth.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Federal prosecutors say the government isn’t required to pay for an expert to investigate whether recordings inside a private prison violated inmates’ constitutional rights. Attorneys say some of their meetings and phone calls with clients at the Corrections Corp. of America prison in Leavenworth have been recorded in violation of the inmates’ Sixth Amendment right to a fair trial. U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson has appointed Ohio attorney David Cohen as special master to look into possible violations of attorney-client privilege. Officers with the Topeka Police Department arrested a 28-year-old Manhattan man Wednesday.  Jermaine Patton was apprehended at approximately 10:00 PM at a location in Topeka for failing to appear in Riley County District Court.  The original offense listed on this warrant was violation of the offender registration act.  The warrant had a bond of $10,000 and Patton is no longer confined at the time of this report.

TOPEKA — A Kansas sheriff’s detective claims in a lawsuit he was fired after refusing to end an investigation into rape allegations against a Holton man. In the lawsuit filed Wednesday in federal court, Al Dunn claims Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse pressured him to back off the investigation into rape allegations against Jacob Ewing. The lawsuit claims Morse faced complaints from Ewing’s family and friends who believed they could influence Morse’s re-election bid. Morse told The Topeka Capital-Journal the claims are “baseless” and “ludicrous,” and his department hasn’t faced pressure to back off the investigation. He also said he wouldn’t…
