PITTSBURG — Authorities are investigating a Kansas restaurant robbery that netted $2. The Pittsburg Morning Sun reports that two men are accused of forcing three Jimmy John’s employees to the floor Monday night. Night manager Seth Cheney says that after he told the masked suspects he couldn’t open the safe or register, they demanded cash from the Pittsburg sandwich shop’s employees. Officers filed a report for a motor vehicle theft in the 2400 block of Woodway Dr. on February 7, 2017 at approximately 5:00 PM. Officers listed Zachary Porter, 28, of Manhattan, as the victim when Joyce Porter, Zachary’s wife, reported his 2015 Scion FRS had been taken sometime between 9:00 PM on February 6, 2017 and 3:40 PM on February 7, 2017. Joyce reported that the vehicle had approximately $14,000.00 worth of military gear stored in it, bringing the total loss associated with this case to approximately $40,000.00. With the construction of a new Genesis Health Club coming to Manhattan, the company’s CEO and attorney were both present at Tuesday’s City Commission meeting asking for a sales tax exemption on $6 million of material costs. Attorney at Law Korb Maxwell led commissioners in the discussion. Total costs for the new health club are estimated at $12 million. Maxwell says the new facility will be approximately twice the size of the current one on the west end of Manhattan on Anderson Avenue. According to a recent press release from Via Christi Heath, Via Christi in Manhattan and Wamego Health Center provided more than four million dollars in community benefit in fiscal year 2016. The company’s total community benefit was nearly $78 million across its nine Kansas hospitals. Manhattan and Wamego combined donated nearly one million dollars in charity care and nearly three million dollars in unpaid costs of Medicaid services. Some other examples of local charity from the hospitals include the Flint Hills Community Clinic and Manhattan’s free weekly car seat checks.
TOPEKA — A civil rights advisory panel says a Kansas law requiring people to show photo ID at the polls and provide proof-of-citizenship documents to register to vote may discriminate against minorities. It also urges the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division to investigate whether the Kansas law violates federal voting laws. TOPEKA — Kansas legislative committees are preparing to debate raising income taxes and other budget-balancing moves. The Senate Assessment and Taxation Committee expected to vote Tuesday on a plan from the chamber’s GOP leaders for boosting personal income taxes. The bill would eliminate an income tax exemption for more than 330,000 farmers and business owners and increase rates for all income taxpayers to raise $660 million over two years. The Senate Ways and Means Committee planned to discuss spending issues. It was reviewing accounting moves and other steps proposed by Brownback that include scaling back state contributions to public employee pensions.…

Austen Doyal, 23, of Manhattan, was arrested in the 100 block of Courthouse Plz. on February 6, 2017 at approximately 10:20 AM. Doyal was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia, and a Manhattan Municipal Court warrant for failure to appear. Doyal’s total bond was set at $12,000.00. Doyal was not confined at the time of this report.
A Junction City woman has been arrested in connection with a Sunday evening altercation in Junction City that sent a Junction City man to the hospital. According to a news release from Junction City Police late Monday afternoon, police were dispatched at approximately 7:33 PM to the 700 block of W. 6th St. in reference to a subject that was bleeding. Upon arrival Ama Horton,34, was located and found to have multiple stab wounds. Horton was interviewed and a suspect was identified.
