With policing being more closely observed since the recent events in Ferguson, Mo., Baltimore, Md., and in New York City, Riley County Police Department Director Brad Schoen told county commissioners Thursday morning that he’s taken preemptive measures to make sure community trust is strong. Schoen said his department took part in training last month that addressed the topic of fair and impartial policing. NEWTON, Kan. (AP) Authorities have identified a 63-year-old man who died in an apartment fire in Newton. Newton police say Bruce Rempel died Tuesday night after a fire broke out in his apartment. According to Lt. Bryan Hall, police responded to a report of smoke in the apartment and were told there was a man inside. Police say they tried to rescue Rempel, but were pushed back by heavy smoke and flame when they opened his door. When fire crews arrived they found flames coming from a sixth-floor window and evacuated residents from the top three floors of the seven-story…
SALINA, Kan. (AP) A 51-year-old woman was found guilty in the operation of an unlicensed animal boarding facility in Salina. The Salina Journal (http://bit.ly/1VTMBng ) reports that Stephanie Pankratz was convicted Monday on 80 counts in connection with the facility, including 22 counts of failure to register, 19 counts of not meeting animal care requirements and three counts of owning prohibited wild, exotic, poisonous or vicious animals. Authorities say Salina Animal Shelter workers confiscated 51 animals from Pankratz’s boarding facility called Playful Pets on Oct. 23, 2014. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas may have to pay $42 million to a former Pizza Hut franchise operation owner over his challenge of a tax bill. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1jCRCnO ) Gene Bicknell has battled the state since Kansas said he owed $42 million based on his 2006 sale of NPC International, which has hundreds of Pizza Hut franchises. The Kansas Court of Tax Appeals determined Bicknell was a Kansas resident and owed the money. Bicknell says he was living in Florida, but paid the $42 million and appealed. A Junction City teenager was injured in a Wabaunsee county accident on I-70 Wednesday evening. Justice Rexrode, 19, was westbound in a 2011 Chevy Tahoe a little more than a half mile west of K-99 when the vehicle went off the roadway to the right, Rexrode overcorrected, and the vehicle went across the highway to the left, overturning in the median. Rexrode was taken to Geary Community Hospital. He was wearing a seatbelt. The accident was reported at 5:10 p.m.
The Junction City/Geary County Drug Operations Group received a tip Tuesday about a methamphetamine lab located on a vacant property located in the 22,000 block of Humboldt Creek Road in rural southeastern Geary County. A search warrant was obtained for the property and an abandoned clandestine methamphetamine lab was located inside a barn. The Riley County Police Department’s Hazardous Materials Response Team responded and assisted with evidence collection and the cleanup of the lab. Materials used in the making of methamphetamine were collected and disposed of. The clandestine lab appeared to be abandoned during the middle of the cooking process.…
