Beginning this week, lane changes will occur on Kimball Avenue for both eastbound and westbound traffic near the Denison Avenue intersection. Riley County Commissioners tabled a request to extend the Native Stone Scenic Byway Monday morning. During a June meeting members of the Native Stone Scenic Byway Committee and representatives from the Kansas Department of Transportation presented the concept to commissioners of extending the byway into Riley County along K-18 East to the intersection with K-177 and thence south along K-177 to the county line. Dealing with solid waste is a big job–and Pottawatomie County’s Sanitarian/Landfill Supervisor is preparing a long range plan on the way the county deals with such waste. Scott Schwinn addressed County Commissioners Monday and told the group he is working on a five year plan to present to the state, which would include household waste, recycled, C& D (construction and demolition), compost, residential waste, and the way waste is transferred. Fire caused an estimated $7,000 in damage to a building in the 2200 block of College Avenue. The Manhattan Fire Department responded to the reported past structure fire shortly before 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Upon arrival, crews found a three story apartment with a sprinkler activated in the kitchen of an apartment. Crews were able to quickly determine the fire was extinguished by the sprinkler system. At the time of the fire, one occupant was home in the apartment and was able to leave the residence without injury. Loss is estimated at $2000 to contents and $5000 to the structure. The owner…

A Manhattan man has been arrested on a warrant from the Department of Homeland Security.  Nemesio Fermin, 26, was taken into custody by the Riley County Police Department Saturday night shortly  before 10:30 while at the Riley County Police Department Law Enforcement Center. Fermin was arrested on the warrant from Homeland Security with “no bond” attached to it. At the time of this report he was no longer confined at the Riley County Jail.
