Story by Megan Moser, The Mercury Riley County had five firms apply to consult on its comprehensive plan update, officials said Thursday morning. Planning and special projects director Amanda Webb provided the update at Thursday’s meeting. The comprehensive plan is a document that guides growth and economic development within the county while also emphasizing agricultural and rural preservation. County commissioners in April approved spending a total of $150,000 for an update to the plan. The selection committee received hard copies of the submissions this week. An Army AH-64 Apache crash at Fort Riley on Tuesday left two pilots injured, marking another aviation incident in a string of crashes for the service. The Manhattan Mercury reports that the pair of soldiers with the 1st Infantry Division’s Combat Aviation Brigade were being treated for injuries after the crash, which occurred during gunnery training, according to a spokesperson for the installation. It’s unclear what caused the crash, and officials are investigating the incident. The Army has been marred by a string of helicopter incidents, particularly among Apache and Black Hawk helicopters. Manhattan’s Rue 21 clothing store is shuttering its doors. The Manhattan Mercury reports that the local store inside Manhattan Town Center is having a liquidation sale, following the company’s recent Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. A closing date hasn’t been announced. According to Reuters, the teen fashion retailer is planning to close all of its 543 U.S. stores within the next two months. Rue 21 also plans to sell its intellectual property. The Pennsylvania-based company has not issued any statement or commented publicly on the bankruptcy.

Woodrow Wilson Elementary is celebrating a century of educating Manhattan students. The Manhattan Mercury reports that the school will host an open house Thursday evening commemorating 100 years of teaching and learning. The open house will include a public viewing of the school’s new gymnasium and storm shelter and will also include food trucks, old photos of the school through the years and a chance for former students to celebrate in some of the nostalgia. A Manhattan woman is facing new charges of aggravated assault and criminal possesson of a weapon. The Riley County Police Department says 20-year-old Ladaisha Ransom was arrested at the jail Tuesday morning on the aformentioned charges. An online criminal complaint also alleges an attempted aggravated robbery charge, stemming from April 22. Ransom also was arrested April 30 for violating terms of her probation and was charged April 4 with drug distribution charges. RCPD says Ransom remains jailed on a total $30,000 bond.

Ladaisha Ransom, 20, of Manhattan, was arrested on May 7, 2024, at approximately 9:45 AM in the 100 block of S. Seth Child Road.  Ransom was arrested on probable cause offenses of criminal possession of a weapon by a felon and aggravated assault.  Total bond in this matter was set at $30,000. Ransom was confined at the time of this report.
