Updated 11:30 a.m. Thursday: After nearly four days, a Riley County jury has found a Manhattan man guilty of Attempted First Degree Murder and Battery. Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson indicates they are very satisfied with the verdict involving Samuel Dartez. Wilkerson adds they are happy for the victim and hope she can move past the life of physical and emotional trauma. The defense rested its case and closing arguments were heard Wednesday afternoon. A Junction City doctor was bound over as charged Wednesday at a preliminary hearing for aggravated sexual battery. Allan Holiday was taken into custody last July after a report of an alleged aggravated sexual battery of a 16-year-old juvenile male. The alleged victim testified at the hearing. Junction City Police at the time of the arrest indicated Holiday was arrested following an investigation of an incident reportedly occurring at a residence in Junction City. Holiday’s arraignment has been set for January 22nd. Holiday has served as an orthopedic surgeon at Geary Community Hospital.

COLBY-A heavy winter storm dumped more than a foot of snow in northwest Kansas, forcing the closure of at least one area highway. The National Weather Service says the heaviest snowfall was from Atwood to Colby, where about 20 inches of snow was recorded early Wednesday. Heavy snowfall was also reported in Sharon Springs, which got about a foot of snow, and Goodland, which recorded about 7 inches of snow. ATCHISON-Authorities have taken a person into custody in connection with an online threat to a northeast Kansas college. The St. Joseph News-Press reports (http://bit.ly/1l5Bhcb ) security was increased at Benedictine College late Tuesday after an anonymous threat posted on the social networking site YikYak. Atchison police Chief Mike Wilson says authorities arrested one person associated with the comments, but formal charges hadn’t been filed early Wednesday. HIAWATHA– A school bus carrying about 20 students has rolled over in northeast Kansas, injuring students onboard. The Brown County Sheriff’s Department told MSCnews (http://bit.ly/1Of8Bau ) the accident involving the school bus from the Hiawatha school district occurred early Wednesday in Hiawatha. Brown County Sheriff John Merchant says about 20 students were on the bus, and all were taken to a hospital for assessment. Merchant says the students’ injuries don’t appear to be life-threatening. The Junction City Police Department has yet another scam to report–the second in as many days. According to Lt. Jeff Childs, JCPD has received numerous calls from citizens regarding telephone calls that they have received from persons identifying themselves as IRS agents. The subjects are telling the person that receives the call that they owe back taxes and that if they do not send payment right away that they will be arrested.
