The Riley County has won the Central Region Fire Prevention Program of the Year award from the U.S. Army Installation Management Command’s. The department scored 99.51 percent overall. The Fire Prevention Branch of FRFD received several prevention-specific honors.The Prevention Branch educates soldiers, family members, and patrons of the post. “We work with the entire installation and regional partners, delivering services ranging from fire safety briefings to the newest soldiers arriving at Fort Riley to providing fire safety recommendations to the garrison and division commanders,” Ivan May, lead fire inspector said. The Flint Hills Discovery Center will host a lecture series about destinations to visit in the Flint Hills. The first Go See It! lecture of the year will be hosted Thursday, April 16 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.. The lecture will feature a guest historian from the Council Grove area who will tell unique stories of Morris County, including the Santa Fe Trail and famous trees native to Kansas. The second lecture will be held May 21 from 6:30-7:30 and feature a historian from the Chase County Historical Museum who will discuss attractions near Cottonwood Falls. Wamego’s USD 320 Board of Education has named new high school football and basketball coaches. As previously announced, Lee Weber will be the new football coach and was on Monday night’s consent agenda. Also at Monday’s meeting, Board President Richard Weixelman opened the meeting with an addition to the consent agenda of the hiring of Kevin Kinderknect as the High School’s Girls Basketball Coach for the 2015-2016 school year. A Manhattan man currently facing 24 different charges, including vehicle theft and possession of drug paraphernalia, appeared in Riley County District Court Tuesday afternoon. Jeremy Spaur appeared in Judge William Malcolm’s courtroom, alongside his attorney, Larry McRell.  McRell asked that the case be set for a one hour preliminary hearing. Judge Malcolm set the prelim for May 1st at 9 a.m.

The Leonardville man charged with three sexual exploitation of a child charges after being arrested in Arizona, made his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon via web cam. An affidavit disclosed to KMAN last month referred to 100 counts of sexual exploitation of a child, however John Thomas only faces three actual charges.  The affidavit mentioned websites associated with pornography as well. A game which originally ended in heartbreak for one team may have had almost as many perks as bringing home the win. The Manhattan Fire Department will be conducting fire scenarios starting Tuesday through Friday.  The training will be held at a single family dwelling located at 531 Bluemont. This exercise will give fire personnel the ability to train in an actual structure in the community to aid them in being proficient in a variety of disciplines associated with fire fighting functions and responsibilities. Some of the skills firefighters will practice include- fire attack, search, ventilation , and MAYDAY operations.  There will be no live fire training conducted in the structures, but theatrical smoke may be used giving the appearance of real smoke. …
