K-State released the following press release on Thursday morning: MANHATTAN — A $250,000 gift from Abaxis to the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University helps establish the new Center of Excellence for Vector-Borne Diseases. The Kansas Department of Transportation has announced their March bids, and a large Riley County project is on the list of approved projects. The construction will improve the north junction of Highway U.S. 24 and K-13 south to east junction of U.S. 24 and K-177. This will be a milling and overlay project for 5.6 miles of roadway. Shilling Construction and Asphalt, out of Manhattan, will complete the work. The price estimate for the project is $5,093,570.75.

Weather tight doors, a prisoner security sally port, a screening area, and a new break room are just some of the security plans being proposed for the Riley County Courthouse. Recent plans and estimates were presented to county commissioners during their Thursday meeting, as Architect, Bruce McMillan requested approval to move forward with the current plans. McMillan indicated most of the plans are the same from his previous presentation, but the state historical society’s comments required him to make a few minor adjustments. A public meeting to present Manhattan’s draft 2015-2019 Consolidated Plan and the 2015 Annual Plan for the Community Development Block Grant program will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (April 16) in the Commission Room at City Hall on Poyntz Avenue. A Manhattan man has been found guilty of five charges, with four of those being drug-related. A Riley County jury found Eric Lipp guilty of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, cocaine, methamphetamine hydrochloride, and drug paraphernalia. The fifth conviction was for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. The trial lasted one day. Lipp’s sentencing is set for May 18th. Lipp entered a not guilty plea to the charges last September. A 21-year-old Manhattan woman faces several counts of criminal use of a financial card and theft by deception following her arrest Wednesday night. Ashley Wright was taken into custody at about 10 p.m. Wednesday on a warrant for 10 counts of criminal use of a finacial card, two counts of forgery, 10 counts of theft by deception, and theft. Wright was arrested while in the 3100 block of Fort Riley Boulevard. Her bond was set at $5,000.
