A Manhattan man was arrested for criminal possession of a weapon. Denzel Leonard, 22, was arrested on Thursday at approximately 2:30 p.m. while at his home in the 2000 block of Tecumseh Road. Leonard was arrested for the offense of criminal possession of a weapon by a felon after officers found him to be in possession of a firearm. He was given a bond of $5,000 and at the time of this report he was confined at the Riley County Jail. TOPEKA — State officials are preparing to issue a new fiscal forecast and it could leave the state with a projected deficit in its current budget again. Kansas State University has been designated as the first Bicycle Friendly University in Kansas by the League of American Bicyclists, according to a press release sent by the Flint Hills Metropolitan Planning Organization. K-State has received the bicycle organization’s Bronze-Level Bicycle Friendly University award. In all, the league awarded or renewed bicycle-friendly status to 49 universities in 31 states this year, bringing the total of designated bicycle friendly universities and colleges to 127 in the nation. Starting Dec. 1, Fort Riley’s Grant, Estes and a portion of 12th Street access control points will be closed Saturdays. The 12th Street commercial gate will remain open Saturdays for all commercial vehicles. The changes are necessary to maintain soldiers’ readiness for future training and deployment requirements. 51st District St. Representative Ron Highland of rural Wamego in Wabaunsee County has filed for re-election. Highland’s name is currently listed on the Kansas Secretary of State’s office upcoming election filing list. Highland was first elected to the position in 2013. He currently serves as Chair of the Education Committee and a Special Committee on K-12 Student Success. He’s also Vice-chair of the House Special Committee on All Day Kindergarten. Officers with the Riley County Police Department filed a report for theft in the 5500 block of Skyway Drive in Manhattan after a Hertz Rental vehicle was not returned by a customer. This 2015 Chevy Traverse, valued at approximately $29,000, was rented in October of this year and hadn’t been returned. It was recovered Wednesday after police had been contacted. At the time of this report no arrests had been made and no citations issued. This crime continues to be under investigation.
