Sunset Zoo released its attendance numbers for the year of 2014. These numbers, however, are significant to the zoo. They welcomed a record 79,269 visitors last year. Sunset Zoo has been a part of the Manhattan community for 82 years. Zoo director Scott Shoemaker says he and the Zoo staff are “blown away by this growth,” as the increase represents 6 percent up from 2013, and a 26 percent increase over the last five years. The zoo staff credits the attendance to the recent facility improvements,which include the addition of the Nature Exploration Center, an entryway and an education facility, as well as the first two…

Shortly after 5:30 Tuesday morning, the Geary County Sheriff’s Office responded to K-244 Mile Marker three for a report of a burned vehicle. Further investigation revealed the 2008 Mercedes-Benz was burned intentionally and lead to the arrest of Jennifer Grosser of Abilene, and Brandon Johnson of Junction City, for Arson With Intent to Defraud, Conspiracy to Commit Arson, Felony Criminal Damage to Property and Felony Interference With Law Enforcement. Reserve Brandon Watkins scored a career-high 14 points and West Virginia surrendered a double-digit lead before recovering for a 76-72 win over Kansas State on Wednesday night. 42-year old Jackie Oliver of Junction City was arrested Tuesday by Junction City Police on charges of Aggravated Battery in connection with the early Sunday morning shooting at the KINGZ motorcycle club that left him and another man injured. The investigation is still on going. Oliver is currently being held on a $25,000 bond at the Geary County Detention Center. Save the Last Dance is the new temporary exhibit that will be displayed on the second floor of the Flint Hills Discovery Center.  The exhibit will open to the public on Saturday and will run through May 17th. KMAN got a sneak preview of the exhibit Wednesday morning, during a media blitz. The display features images taken by award winning photographer, Noppadol Paothong, who will be visiting the discovery center in March.  The photographs showcase the greater prairie chicken, and it’s related species.
