OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) A suburban Kansas City school district says it is negotiating to bring a Thomas Hart Benton painting out of hiding and display it for the public. The Star reports the painting, called “Utah Highlands,” has not been seen for several years. It was purchased for the Shawnee Mission High School by the class of 1957 and for years was displayed in what is now Shawnee Mission North High School.

“Nearly every retail sector that we monitor was up compared to January of 2014.  Auto sales were down about 7% and Town Center Mall stores reported a few hundred dollars less in sales taxes compared to a year ago.  Otherwise, all other reporting retailers were up.  A nice way to start 2015!”  This statement was made by Manhattan Director of Finance, Bernie Hayen, in reference to the January 2015 sales tax numbers. Fire crews responded to a structure fire on Friday night, which resulted in thousands of dollars worth of damage. Around 8:30 p.m., the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 801 Pottawatomie Avenue for a report of a structure fire.  Upon arrival, crews found a one-story residence with fire and smoke showing on the exterior wall of the structure, as well as a shed.  The fire reached a second alarm before it was contained in 30 minutes. The Manhattan High girls basketball team will play for third place on Saturday night in McPherson after falling to Olathe South Friday night in the semi finals of the Mid America Classic 54-50. Manhattan (9-3) led by five at the end of the first half. The Falcons would outscore MHS in the second half 32-23.
