As KMAN reported on Friday, John Ball has officially filed to run in the upcoming Manhattan City Commission race. Ball currently serves at Fort Riley as an army civilian. He has served at other army installations, and even has project manager experience. As far as his plans if he is elected, Ball said, “to be a servant leader for the people. I have a heart to serve people and listen to people.”

This year’s Manhattan Town Center Martin Luther King Jr. holiday celebration began at 9 Monday morning with a day of service. Volunteers joined together to assist in various projects, and many participated in a march down Poyntz. March participants wore signs that said “I march because..”. Each person was asked to fill out the blank space below the words with the reason they were marching. Starting at 10 a.m., the celebration inside the mall began. Entertainment was provided by several school groups, churches and other individuals. Community recognitions and Martin Luther King Jr. art and writing competition award winners were acknowledged.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr Day, local quilter Ronna Tyson has made a quilt to honor King’s life and accomplishments. Tyson says she traveled to multiple quilt stores from Bellville to Manhattan and even searched through friends’ stashes to gather over 475 small pieces of fabric in order to depict different skin tones. Tyson spent a total of 540 hours on the quilt. Dr. King visited Kansas State university just four months before his death on April 4, 1968. 18-year-old Dalton Hayes is due in court in Florida on Monday. Authorities suspect Hayes and his 13-year-old girlfriend, Cheyenne Phillips in a multi-state crime spree across the south. Both are from Kentucky.
Denver shelters report an increase in people who say they’re homeless because of marijuana, which became legal in Colorado last year. A local university study on the impact of legal marijuana, including homelessness, is underway.
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Operators of the state’s central law enforcement training facility say $3.9 million is need from the Legislature to avoid extreme cuts. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center is generating less revenue than expected. The University of Kansas runs the center near the southern Kansas town of Yoder as part of its continuing education program. Center director Ed Pavey says the district and municipal court docket fees that the center has relied on as its main funding source have plummeted in recent years.
