Summer reading has an important mission: to motivate kids, teens, and adults to read for fun, and help prevent learning loss while school is out. To accomplish this mission, the Manhattan Public Library has partnered with local businesses and organizations to give out great prizes for reading, such as free books, gift certificates to local restaurants, and passes to the Sunset Zoo and the Flint Hills Discovery Center. An Ogden man, sentenced a year and a half ago after a no contest plea to second degree murder, was represented in Riley County District Court Friday for a status hearing. Michael Dechant, 21, who was 19 at the time of his sentencing in December of 2013, had filed a motion to withdraw his previous plea. Another status hearing is set for August 10th in Riley County District Court. Dechant’s sentence was for more than 26 years, in connection with the death of six-month-old Dominick Lubrano. Officers with the Riley County Police Department responded to an altercation in the 1300 block of Central Park in Manhattan City Park Thursday afternoon at approximately 3:45. A 12-year-old male was taken into custody and ultimately transported to the North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Facility for the offenses of attempted aggravated battery, aggravated assault, criminal threat, and battery. There were two victims included in this investigation– a 26-year-old female who sustained minor injury after a bite and a 12-year-old male with no injury. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Junction City man has filed a $2 million lawsuit against the Shawnee County Jail claiming it failed to provide proper medical attention for a broken bone in his foot and subsequent head injury. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Jason Dixon, 34, filed the lawsuit in a handwritten petition May 13. Dixon is being held on a federal hold order and pleaded guilty last year to conspiring to distribute 280 grams or more of crack cocaine. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas Senate has approved a measure that would allow alcohol at state events at the Capitol and adjusts a number of liquor permit processes. Republican Rep. Vicki Schmidt of Topeka said she opposed the bill, which was approved Thursday on a 30-6 vote, because it vaguely defined when alcohol would be permitted in the Capitol. The bill also would allow patrons of art galleries to bring their own bottles of wine to painting sessions.
