Motions were filed and denied, tearful statements were given, and ultimately a man found guilty of aggravated robbery was sentenced to prison time.  This all took place during Trey Campbell’s sentencing in Riley County District Court Tuesday morning. Campbell’s Attorney, Jillian Waesche filed motions for acquittal , a new trial, and departure, stating the evidence presented was just testimony and there was no hard evidence. Judge David Stutzman chose to deny these motions. Another status hearing was held in the case of Derik Kesler, who faces a vehicular homicide charge involving the death of a bicyclist from Manhattan. Kesler appeared in Riley County District Court alongside his attorney, who requested a three day jury trial.  The trial was set for September 22nd-24th. Judge David Stutzman asked that pre-trial motions be filed by attorneys by June 26th.  A two hour preliminary hearing and pre-trial hearing were also set for August 4th at 1:30 p.m.

As a part of their 50th anniversary events in rememberance of the Vietnam War, Kansas State held a Memorial Day ceremony on campus honoring the 42 soldiers, airmen and marines who died in Vietnam after attending the university. A crowd much larger than anticipated by organizers arrived Monday to honor those who lost their lives in the war. Among attendees were  dozens of motorcycle riders escorted to the Vietnam War Memorial on campus by police where the ceremony was held. On May 23 at approximately 5:23 pm, the 9-1-1 Center received several calls concerning lightning striking an apartment complex in Grandview Plaza. The complex is located at 1103-1111 Cannon View. There is a total of 36 apartments in this complex. Grandview Plaza Fire responded and along with law enforcement evacuated all the apartments. They also requested Mutual Aid of ladder/aerial trucks from both Junction City Fire and Ft. Riley Fire Departments. Wacha pitched seven sparkling innings for his seventh straight win, and the Cardinals stopped a three-game losing streak with a 6-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.
