As body-worn cameras continue to be implemented by Riley County Police, more cameras are necessary for officers who are on duty.  A public hearing was held during Thursday’s county commission meeting to discuss the Edward Bryne Memorial Justice Assistant Grant, which would provide funding for additional cameras. According to RCPD Director, Brad Schoen, the amount of funding would be around $17,000. After closing the public hearing, the commission unanimously chose to approve to move forward with the grant. Following their regularly scheduled meeting, the commission also attended a joint city/county meeting with Pottawatomie County Commissioners and Manhattan City Commissioners.  Later…

A Wichita man, convicted of methamphetamine charges, appeared in Pottawatomie County Court Thursday morning. Joseph Swarts was arrested back in July at the Quality Inn, along with other individuals, for possession of meth and drug paraphernalia. Swarts received an underlying sentence of 30 months, or two and a half years, with the Department of Corrections, but was granted probation. The court also imposed costs and ordered him to complete a drug treatment program.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)– Jeremy Guthrie pitched six shutout innings and the Kansas City Royals beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-1 on Wednesday night. The Royals tied a club record with 24 consecutive scoreless innings, which was set June 9-12, 1976. That streak ended in the seventh when Brandon Phillips’ two-out double off reliever Ryan Madson scored Zack Cozart. The board covered old business over budget planning for the 2015 and 2016 school year, discussing budget steering committee recommendations presented by Lew Faust, Larry Doll and Robert Seymour. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The House has advanced a bill that would give Kansas’ secretary of state the power to prosecute election fraud. The chamber gave the measure first-round approval Wednesday. Several lawmakers questioned the necessity of the bill, given the relatively few recorded instances of election fraud. Others expressed concern that the Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach might bring charges when prosecutors believed people did not intentionally break the law.
