The association’s ninth annual Tough Enough to Wear Pink rodeo will be Friday, July 24, to honor cancer survivors and raise awareness and funds for Kansas State University’s Johnson Cancer Research Center. Beginning this month the Riley County Police Department’s Nextdoor.com counterpart, NextCoffee, will go completely on- demand in an effort to make the program even more available to area neighborhoods. Prior to this change NextCoffee was held on the last Monday of each month. A Manhattan man was taken into custody Tuesday on an out of jurisdiction warrant from Geary County for a variety of charges. Terrence Wallace, 26, was arrested by Riley County Police at 2:45 p.m. in the 300 block of Hackberry Avenue. Charges include driving while suspended, reckless driving, and fleeing and attempting to elude. Wallace’s bond has been set at $5,000. He was in Geary County Custody at about nine Tuesday night.
The Wamego City Commission reviewed the Kansas Sampler Festival results. At Tuesday’s meeting, the Kansas Sampler Festival committee, Michele Crisler, Bunny McCloud, and Betsy Riblett, informed the Commission the net profit from the two-year festival was over $34,000. Crisler said the Festival had a very positive effect on both Wamego and Kansas. She said because it was such a picturesque event, she asked for approval to put together a commemorative photo album, wanting to print 25 copies, with some going to the Library and City offices, and selling the remainder. Manhattan city commissioners passed a measure Tuesday night that will issue industrial revenue bonds for Manko Window Systems, Inc., for two new additions to its existing building. The bonds totals $7.75 million and passed 5-0. Industrial revenue bonds are tax-exempt loans issued by state or local governments to finance a private company’s expansion, construction or acquisition of manufacturing facilities and equipment. Manko, which began with just two employees in 1989, employs 250 in Manhattan alone and has expanded operations to Aurora, Colo., and Des Moines, Iowa. In accordance with Executive Order 10-12, Governor Sam Brownback on Tuesday ordered flags in Kansas to be flown at half-staff from sun-up to sun-down through Saturday, July 25, 2015. Flags in Kansas may be ordered to half-staff again on the date of the funeral for Navy Petty Officer Randall Smith if that occurs after July 25. Smith has family ties to Kansas.
