Pottawatomie County Commissioner Pat Weixelman updates KMAN on county news during Monday’s commissioners meeting. According to County Attorney Sherri Schuck, crime rates this year are lower than last year by 19 cases. The cases involved traffic and criminal citations. The citations were also down at Country Stampede this year. Fire Supervisor Jared Barnes said there were 98 fire reports for the previous month. The incident reports included medical, car wrecks and the actual fire reports themselves. The Riley County Police Department Life Saving Award was presented Monday to citizen Bob Brown by Karen McCulloh, the Vice-Chair of the Riley County Law Enforcement Agency Law Board. Brown saved a two year old child from a residential fire in Riley last month, which involved an explosion KMAN reported on that same day from the scene. McCulloh recounted Brown running from his residence a block away, climbing through a window, navigating to the child’s bedroom, grabbing the child and handing the child to a neighbor. The house was fully engulfed in fire within a minute of Brown exiting. Fair time is just around the corner and Riley County Extension Agent Jennifer Wilson told county commissioners it’s a busy week in her office. Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder took his turn at the podium Monday as Big 12 Media Days opened in Dallas. As is the case most of the time, the Hall of Fame coach did not offer much insight regarding his team. The Riley County Police Department filed a report for aggravated battery and battery in the 1000 block of Yuma Street Saturday morning at about 12:35 AM. Officers were dispatched to a report of a fight in progress and once on scene witnessed several subjects fleeing on bicycles. Police found two subjects who had received injury and both were transported for medical evaluation.  Dewuan Shorter, 20, of Manhattan received injury to his hand from a folding pocket knife and Anthony Shehan, 44, of Manhattan received injury consistent with a physical altercation. A Westmoreland man was arrested for attempted 2nd degree murder and aggravated battery during the early Sunday morning hours, according to a press release from the Pottowatomie County Sheriff’s Department. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call on Sunday at approximately 2:30 a.m. that someone had been shot at 110 South 4th St., in Westmoreland. A second 911 call was received and the caller reported that two individuals had been shot. Sheriff’s deputies located two individuals outside the residence, suffering from non-life threatening gunshot wounds.
