Exhibition Designer Lindsay Smith says the “Cairns on the Beach” courtyard installation has been in the works the past two years, but is now available for viewing and the enjoyment of Museum patrons… Smith explains the purpose of the pre-vegetated modules or plantings around the stone sculptures are to soften and add color. Several Manhattan residents got a scare Tuesday afternoon when a man fired “test” shots from a pellet gun near a pawn shop. Riley County police responded to the scene at 416 S. 4th Street around 4:20 PM after receiving reports of a man firing what was believed by bystanders to be a rifle. Officers arrived on scene and were able to determine that this unknown male was test firing an air rifle (pellet gun) near a local pawn shop. A Manhattan man is behind bars Wednesday after police say an argument escalated into violence. Earnest Johnson, 51, was arrested at 1000 Pierre Street June 30, around 8:30 AM. He’s charged with aggravated domestic battery. Johnson was arrested after probable cause was found supporting claims that he attempted to strangle the victim. Due to the nature of the crime, the victim’s name is not being released. Also arrested while officers were on scene was Jennifer Vandermark, 47, of Manhattan. Vandermark was arrested for the offense of criminal damage to property after a tire and vehicle belonging to Johnson was damaged.…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas residents are being warned to be cautious around skunks during an uptick in rabies cases. Kansas State University’s veterinary diagnostic laboratory says 70 rabies cases have been reported this year the same number as all of last year. The Wichita Eagle reports (http://bit.ly/1BXIcvC ) skunks accounted for almost 75 percent of the rabies cases. A Kansas State lab diagnostician says most of the other cases probably began with a rabid skunk biting another animal. Kansas State University has named Ralph Richardson as the interim dean and CEO of K-State Olathe, effective Aug. 2. Richardson has served as dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University since 1998 and will be succeeded by Tammy Beckham, currently director of the Institute for Infectious Animal Diseases in College Station, Texas.
