1st Infantry Division Public Affairs: After nine months in Iraq, the 1st Infantry Division has returned to the Flint Hills. Led by Maj. Gen. Paul E. Funk II and Command Sgt. Maj. Michael A. Grinston, a group of Soldiers from Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 1st Inf. Div., returned June 29 to Fort Riley from a nine-month deployment split between Iraq andsouthwest Asia. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Gay and lesbian couples can obtain marriage licenses in almost all of the state’s 105 counties, with the number growing after last week’s U.S. Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage. Court clerks in at least 94 counties either were issuing licenses to same-sex couples Tuesday or were prepared to do so. That’s up from 61 counties before the U.S. Supreme Court ruling declaring gay marriage legal across the nation. A Geary County aggravated indecent liberties case resulted in a more than four year sentence for a Junction City man. William Cordray was sentenced to 52 months earlier this week with the Department of Corrections. Cordray entered a plea to aggravated indecent solicitation of a child and attempted aggravated indecent solicitation. He had agreed to serve the sentence per sentencing guidelines which is based upon his criminal history. But he has reportedly filed an appeal. Cordray originally faced six counts. He was taken into custody by Junction City Police in June of last year.

  The Kansas Department of Health is taking steps to fight a viral disease outbreak like the Ebola crisis of 2014. Brenda Nickel, director of the Health Department, says $23,259 dollars in funds will be allotted to Riley County. The funding from the Kansas Department of Health will be used to provide training, special equipment and funds to create a part-time communications intern position. The paid intern will create message maps and organize community training. HOUSTON (AP)– Houston’s young hitters were disciplined Monday night against a veteran pitcher struggling with command, and it propelled the Astros to a win over the top team in the American League. Chris Carter and Jose Altuve homered to back a solid start by rookie Lance McCullers in a 6-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Late Monday afternoon, staff at Via Christi Hospital on College Ave. in Manhattan received a piece of mail that they later deemed to be suspicious in nature. With the purpose of being overly cautious the Riley County Police Department Hazardous Materials Response Team and Bomb Team with assistance from the Manhattan Fire Department Hazardous Materials Response Team responded to the call. It was later determined that the suspicious piece of mail was a document that posed no risk to public safety. The Riley County Police Department would like to thank the Manhattan Fire Department for their assistance and continued support.
