A Canadian soldier standing guard at a war memorial in the country’s capital was shot to death, and gunfire then erupted inside Parliament, authorities said. One gunman was killed, and police said they were searching for as many as two others.

Manhattan Ogden USD 383 school board members focused on two main topics during their fall retreat: district preschool programs and district adult education programs. The retreat was held Wednesday evening at 5:15 p.m. at the Robinson Education Center. Director of Early Learning Programs, Elisabeth Nelson presented the preschool programs item, and began by sharing a quick video. After a month of operation, the Bluemont Hotel held their ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday among Manhattan city commissioners. The Bluemont hosted a tour of their hotel to visitors, which Director of Sales and Events Jenn Alley says displays the culture of Manhattan itself. “The Bluemont is different because it’s a true boutique hotel. It’s not branded, so it’s unique to Manhattan. A Junction City man facing charges in connection with a July shooting has entered a not guilty plea in connection with the case. Robbie Dewayne Fountain Jr.’s arraignment was held earlier this week in Geary county District Court. A status hearing is set for January 12th. Fountain is also serving 24 months in the Geary county Jail in connection with another case. Also charged in the shooting is Jefferson James of Junction City, who failed to appear at his last hearing. A bench warrant has been issued for James. Wamego’s Waters True Value Hardware celebrates their Grand Reopening recently. The Waters purchased the former Lichtenhan Hardware store in December of 2013. Because of this purchase, the Waters True Value store in east Manhattan closed, moving the inventory to Wamego. The Wamego True Value has undergone major resetting, and new signage changes in these past months. According to President Jim Waters, they plan to carry on the tradition of the Lichtenhan Family, which had been in business in the area since 1907. The cost of living for an average Kansas State University student has once again increased at a greater increase then the average cost of living for an American according to recently released data. The 2014 Student Price Index (SPI), compiled by the Kansas State University Economics Club, increased by 4.7 percent from 2013, significantly more than national averages over a comparable period. The SPI is based on prices collected on a bundle of goods a typical Kansas State University student purchases compared to the previous year’s prices.
