Governor Sam Brownback visited tornado-ravaged Baxter Springs Monday. (AP)The National Weather Service has rated the tornado that struck the southeast Kansas town of Baxter Springs an EF2 on the enhanced Fujita scale, with winds of 130 mph. A team from the agency’s office in Springfield, Mo., issued the rating Monday after surveying damage from the tornado that struck around 5:39 p.m. Sunday.

It appears several grant application deadlines are approaching for a few Riley County departments. During Monday’s county commission meeting, the commission viewed the requests and approved them all. Nursing Supervisor, Linda Redding asked that the Healthy Families Grant renewal letter of intent to apply for the grant be signed. This grant money is used for the Riley County Health Department’s family connections home visiting program. A Manhattan woman, who worked in a doctor’s office, was sentenced Monday to two years on federal probation after pleading guilty to conspiracy to unlawfully distribute prescription drugs. Sarah Harding-Huffine (30) pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to unlawfully distribute prescription drugs. In her plea, she admitted that she conspired with co-defendant Dr. Michael P. Schuster while he was doing business as Manhattan Pain and Spine. Although the defendant was not a licensed health care provider and she did not have a drug registration number from the Drug Enforcement Administration, she distributed controlled substances to Schuster’s patients using pre-signed blank prescription pads.
