For the third straight year, Kansas State football will start the season ranked. On Monday, the season-opening poll was released and the Wildcats were ranked 17th overall, one of four Big 12 teams to start the year in the top 25. Arizona State, last season’s Big 12 title winner, came in as the topped ranked team to start the year at 11th, while Iowa State and Texas Tech were 22nd and 23rd overall. An investigation is underway after shots were fired over the weekend in the 2200 block of College Avenue. According to the Riley County Police Department, a report for criminal discharge of a firearm was filed in the early morning hours Sunday at the apartment complex. Officers listed two men, aged 21 and 22 as the suspects, but have released no further information. Police say the incident is part of an ongoing investigation. Click here for more local news.

Authorities say the inaugural Rock the Plains was an overall safe event for concertgoers. According to statistics provided by Pottawatomie County Sheriff Doug Adams on Sunday, there were just six law enforcement-related calls for service occurring over the weekend at Tuttle Creek State Park, related to the event. Adams said his office arrested one person on suspicion of criminal trespass. Officers also reported two cases of battery, one case of animal cruelty, one water-related call and one non-violent domestic incident. By Emma Loura Manhattan-Ogden focused its hiring efforts on recruiting more bus drivers and para-educators for the upcoming school year. While the need for paras varies year to year based on how many students need their assistance, USD 383’s human resources director said the school district is hopeful about recruiting additional bus drivers. “Those are the two we focused heavily on throughout the year,” HR director Abby Bowen said. A chemical reaction in a laundry basket early Thursday morning caused a small fire at AMC Manhattan 13 theatre. The basket was in a hallway outside the kitchen when items in it spontaneously combusted around 1:00 a.m. Thursday. Staff placed the fiery items in a sink to extinguish the flames, and no fire extinguishers were used. According to a Kansas Department of Agriculture food establishment inspection report, the kitchen filled with smoke but no other areas were affected. The RCPD responded to 15 incidents between August 9 and the morning of August 10, 2025, including an injury accident in the 10700 block of Tuttle Creek Boulevard near Leonardville, an assault in the 7000 block of Tuttle Creek Boulevard in Manhattan, and a battery in the 1100 block of Moro Street.
