Riley County Public Works announced Wednesday that the structure replacement project on Ober Road is scheduled to begin Monday, August 26, 2024. The project is located approximately 4/10ths mile West of the Ober Rd./Droll Rd. Intersection. Ober Rd. will be closed to through traffic during construction from the intersection of Ober Rd./Droll Rd. west to the intersection of Ober Rd. / North Fork Rd. The project is expected to be completed by Friday, August 30, weather permitting.
The Riley County Appraisers office is conducting a survey of multifamily, commercial, and industrial properties where they are studying trends in the local real estate market regarding rent prices, occupancy, and operating expenses. Income and expense questionnaires will be mailed this Thursday, August 15th to Riley County properties in those categories. The forms are also available on the Riley County website in the Appraiser section. The Sunset Zoo announced via a press release Wednesday that red pandas Loofah and Simone gave birth to a female cub on July 14th. “The first 30 days of a red panda cub’s life are critical, and our staff are tending to the cub’s needs around the clock to ensure the best care possible,” said Head Zookeeper Caitlin Kenney. “The good news is, this little girl is a fighter. Jonathon White, 33, of Manhattan, was arrested on August 13, 2024, at approximately 11:04 PM in the 800 block of Dondee Drive. White was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for failure to appear. Total bond was set at $10,000. White was confined at the time of this report. Officers filed a report of fraud in the 300 block of Stockdale Drive in Randolph on August 13, 2024, at approximately 7:09 PM. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the Riverchase Mobile Home Park public water supply system located in Riley County. The advisory took effect Tuesday afternoon and will remain in effect until the conditions are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a power outage causing pumping failure resulting in low pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may put the system at risk for bacterial contamination.
Manhattan city staff has changed their approach to the 2025 budget after commissioners last month indicated they would not support the proposed $2 million worth of reductions which would primarily be personnel cuts. Commissioners deliberated Tuesday on ways to decrease costs for 2025 and beyond in order to reduce expenditures and increase its general fund balance. The city is looking to do this through a combination of personnel reductions, increasing cost recovery, finding operational efficiencies, and utilizing alternative funding sources where possible.
More than 15,000 fans cheered for the entry of the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard from Fort Riley recently at the “Daddy of ‘Em All.” Fort Riley’s mounted color guard attended the 127th annual Cheyenne Frontier Days at the end of July to give displays of cavalry horsemanship and military tradition. The Paola native took fifth place in trap shooting at the Olympic Games late last month, his second time representing Team USA in the international competition. “I thought I had a pretty good performance,” Mein said. “I would have liked to have made it just a little bit farther and brought home a medal, but I got closer than anybody’s been from the U.S. in 20 years in my event.” Read the full story at themercury.com
