August is national anti-terrorism month, and Ft. Riley officials are spreading awareness in order for citizens to be more prepared in spotting a possible attack. Anti-terrorism officer Shane Houle joined News Radio KMAN’s In-Focus on Thursday to discuss the Army’s “iWatch” awareness program. “I strongly encourage and empowers the army community and the local communities in the Flint Hills region to identify and report suspicious behavior potentially could be associated with terrorist activities,” said Houle. The Kansas Department of Transportation will begin resurfacing work on K-18 in Riley and Wabaunsee counties on Monday, Aug. 12. The mill and overlay project covers 14 miles, starting at the K-99 junction to the K-177 junction. Traffic will be restricted to one lane and directed by a pilot car and flaggers where crews actively are working. Drivers should plan for delays of up to 15 minutes. By Emma Loura/Manhattan Mercury Both Republican primaries for Manhattan-area seats in the Kansas House of Representatives went down to the wire Tuesday. Angel Roeser and Megan Steele edged out their opponents by 28 votes each to represent Districts 67 and 51 respectively, setting them up for showdowns against Democratic opponents this fall. Meanwhile U.S. Rep. Tracey Mann, who represents District 1 in the U.S. House, won his primary against challenger Eric Bloom in a landslide. An elderly couple are reportedly victims of an unauthorized use of a credit card Wednesday afternoon in Manhattan. RCPD officers filed a report of criminal use of a financial card around Noon Wednesday. Police listed an 86-year-old man and woman as victims when an unknown person obtained their card number and used it without their permission. The total loss associated with this crime was listed at just over $1,000. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers.

As one major construction project is making strides, another is about to begin. Manhattan city officials said starting Aug. 26 Kimball Avenue will be reopened to east-west traffic at the Denison Avenue intersection, and there “should be” no further Kimball closures. However, shipping delays related to the new traffic signal for the intersection will prevent Denison from reopening to left turns. Only “right-in” and “right-out” southbound traffic will be allowed initially for safety reasons and through traffic on Kimball will not stop.
