CHEROKEE, Kan. (AP) Students at a Kansas high school are hawking java to their teachers and classmates and learning business skills in the process. The Morning Sun in Pittsburg reports that a coffee shop opened this month at Southeast High School in Cherokee. The project is an extension of an existing student-operated shop, called the Spirit Shack. It carries school gear, iPad chargers, vending machine treats and other products. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A series of events are scheduled Jan. 29 in Topeka to celebrate the 153rd anniversary of Kansas statehood. The Kansas Historical Society will host the events, including a dedication ceremony in the Statehouse rotunda on the first floor. The Statehouse restoration project was recently completed after more than 12 years and nearly $330 million. Gov. Sam Brownback will be joined by other dignitaries and musicians for the dedication. School groups will be able to participate in programs in the new visitor center from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Campaign finance records show that Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach began the year with a significant fundraising advantage over Democratic challenger Jean Schodorf. The Republican secretary of state’s re-election campaign filed a report earlier this month showing that he raised $96,000 in cash contributions last year and ended the year with $125,000 in his campaign treasury. Schodorf raised $44,000 and loaned her campaign an additional $2,000. She ended 2013 with almost $39,000 in campaign funds. Manhattan Town Center Mall played host to an all day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday celebration on Monday. Various local organizations and committees set up tables to educate the public about their efforts. Artwork as well as writing entries, from the MLK Jr. Writing and Art Contest, was displayed on a long gray board. Elementary age -high school age children participated in the contest. Many local schools had their students submit entries. Winners were awarded during the celebration. Groups sang, danced, and did poem readings for the occasion. A Wamego man’s photo won a recent photo contest, hosted by the Kansas Green Team program through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Colin MacMillan of Wamego was the overall winner in the contest, with entries from photographers throughout Kansas. The photos were to celebrate the unique character of Kansas, with winning photos to be displayed on the KansasGreenTeams.org home page as well as this website. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Department has announced a missing person report for a St. George woman. Family members indicate Jane Peterson, 56, has been missing for more than 24 hours, with a report filed Sunday morning with the sheriff’s department. Recent reports indicate that Peterson left her 1999 Toyota Tacoma by the beach area in Tuttle Cove. The Pottawatomie Sheriff’s Department reportedly began a search effort and used dogs to scout the area. GoPowercat.com is reporting that K-State lured Dodge City Community College defensive tackle Terrell Clinkscales to switch his commitment from Nebraska. The 6-foot-4 315 pound Clinkscales is a four-star prospect with 40 tackles, seven and a half for loss, and three and a half sacks for the Conquistadors this season. He committed to Nebraska on December 1st, but reportedly changed his mind and told the K-State coaches of his decision this past weekend.
