WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A former Kansas doctor accused of unlawfully possessing drugs and a firearm is headed to trial this week. Lawrence Simons goes on trial Tuesday in federal court in Wichita. District Judge Monti Belot was scheduled to hear arguments Monday on whether jurors may hear a recorded statement Simons made to authorities. Simons, a convicted felon, is accused of giving a bondsman a gun as partial payment for bailing him out of jail in a criminal threat case. Prosecutors also contend that because he had surrendered his license to write prescriptions, he could not lawfully possess drugs later…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A former Kansas House member from Topeka will become interim executive director of the Kansas Health Consumer Coalition next month. The coalition says former Rep. Sean Gatewood will replace executive director Anna Lambertson, who is leaving to lead the Kansas City-based International Relations Council. The council promotes understanding of international affairs among residents in Kansas and Missouri. Lambertson has been the Health Consumer Coalition’s executive director since 2010. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) The Cherokee County Sheriff has been named the 2013 Sheriff of the Year for Kansas. The Joplin Globe reports that the Kansas Sheriff’s Association selected Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves as the 2013 Kansas Sheriff of the Year at its annual fall conference in Hutchinson. Groves was first elected in 2008 and is in his second term as sheriff.

Budget and Finance Officer, Johnette Shepek shared the 2014 Road and Bridge 1/2 cent sales tax projects list during Monday’s Riley County Commission meeting.  Some projects included various culverts, asphalt overlay on Anderson, and a three mile stretch project on McDowell Creek Road. Commissioner, Robert Boyd made suggestions, to the other commissioners, on which projects he thought were most needed.  Boyd indicated the McDowell Creek project is not needed right away as the road is easy to drive on. Updated noon Monday: A fire in training areas on Fort Riley occurred Sunday, November 17. The natural vegetation fire was reported 11:59 a.m. and considered contained by 9:30 p.m. Due to the consistently high winds, Fort Riley Fire Department received fire fighting assets from Geary and Riley County and Kansas Forestry Service – under existing mutual aid agreements – to support their efforts. K-State freshman kicker Jack Cantele blasted all four of his field goal attempts thru the uprights including the 41-yard game winner with three seconds left for a 33-31 victory over TCU on Saturday.  The Big 12 conference rewarded Cantele by naming him its co-special teams player of the week.  The sophomore also connected on attempts of 31, 34 and 23 yards. The kick was K-State’s first last-second game-winner since 1980, when Jim Johnson kicked a 17-yard field goal with one second remaining to give the Wildcats a 17-14 victory over Colorado in the season finale. DENVER (AP) Peyton Manning went virtually untouched by Kansas City’s sack-happy defense Sunday night, throwing for 323 yards and a touchdown to lead the Denver Broncos to a 27-17 victory over the NFL’s last undefeated team. The Chiefs, who came into the game with a league-leading 36 sacks, barely breathed on Manning, who finished 24 for 40. The Broncos tied Kansas City at 9-1 atop the AFC West with a rematch set in two weeks.
