A Fort Riley Soldier charged with second degree murder was sentenced in Geary County Court Tuesday to  117 months, or 9 years and 9 months with the Kansas Department Corrections. Gary Nelson (22) of Junction City, entered a no contest plea in September to charges of second-degree murder and reckless driving. Nelson reportedly told state troopers he intended to commit suicide by running into a semi truck on Interstate 70 in April, but lost his nerve. MANHATTAN — A Kansas State University team recently received a nearly $1.3 million grant from the National Science Foundation’s Major Research Institute for a biomedical instrument that is anticipated to help with breakthroughs in animal and human health as well as cancer treatment. The instrument is a modified wide-bore 600-megahertz magnetic resonance imaging spectrometer that will be equipped with a custom imaging probe. It can heat specific cells in the body using a process called thermal cell therapy that mimics how the body uses fever to fight infections while simultaneously producing real-time, high-resolution images of the heat’s effects on tumors…

USD 320 had a clean audit. At Monday’s Board meeting, Agler & Gaeddert’s Tom Thomas went over elements of the 2012-13 audit report. He said all is as it should be with no violations. The audit reports attached management letter had a few suggestions that should be addressed before next year’ s audit, but nothing major. In other business, the Board approved the resolution for the Capital Outlay tax levy for one year. The resolution authorizes an annual tax levy not to exceed 4 mills. According to a report by Fox 4 (WDAF-TV) in Kansas City, Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was arrested late Sunday night by police in Riverside, MO. A news release says Bowe was clocked going 48 mph in a 35 mph zone, and when an officer approached the vehicle, he noticed a strong odor of marijuana from inside of the vehicle. Bowe posted a bond of $750 and was released on charges of speeding and possession of a controlled substance. He has a court date scheduled for December 18th. A pair of K-State female athletes also recieved Big 12 honors on Monday. K-State point guard Leti Romero was named the Big 12 freshman of the week after averaging 20.5 points per game in wins last weekend over Tennessee State and Charlotte.  Romero, a native of Las Palmas, Spain, scored 25 points against the 49ers on Sunday as she was a perfect 7 for 7 from the field, and 10 for 14 at the free throw line.  She also pulled down a team-best eight rebounds and dished out three assists.  Romero also had 16 points, 8 assists, and 7 rebounds against…
