After lengthy public comment at last month’s Riley County law board meeting, there was absolutely no public coment this time around. However, Law Board member Dave Lewis mentioned continuing concerns he’s hearing from members of the public about problems at Pillsbury Crossing. Just last week Assistant Riley County Police Director John Doehling alerted Riley County Commissioners to the issue, and Lewis said he continues to hear from residents in that area. A request was made by Riley County Health Department Director, Brenda Nickel regarding a “Health Department Culture of Quality Agency Professional Development” training opportunity, during Monday’s county commission meeting. Nickel began by sharing some of the past employment trends within the department, including the turnover rate.  Currently there are 38 staff members employed at the department. The training sessions are designed to help program managers through workshops for quality improvement training. Former Rock Creek standout and now Oklahoma sophomore Liz Herrs uncorked the top javelin throw in the country this season, and set a meet record at the Big 12 Championships with a toss of 189 feet, five inches on Friday in Lubbock, Texas. Herrs bested her Sooner teammate Avione Allgood by just four inches on her final throw of the day to claim the league title.  Herrs has qualified for the NCAA national meet in Eugene, OR from June 11th thru the 14th. Two people were injured in a Geary county accident on I-70 Saturday. The Kansas Highway Patrol reports Grace Doering, 82, and Paul Doering, 87, both of Overland Park were taken to Geary Community Hospital following the accident, reported at 11:35 a.m. Saturday on milemarker 298 in Junction City.   KHP indicates a 2011 Toyota Camry driven by Grace Doering was westbound on I-70 when it went off the roadway into the median and drove over the embankment.  The vehicle landed on the intersecting roadway of “E” Street under the bridge. Both Doerings were wearing seatbelts.

Junction City Police are reporting a drug-related arrest, reported shortly before seven Sunday evening. Todd Ites, 25, of Junction City was taken into custody in the 800 block of North Jefferson Street. No further details are available at this time.
