Riley County Fire District #1 announced Tuesday of the completion of the new Ashland Bottoms Volunteer Fire Station #102, located at 4928 McDowell Creek Road, Manhattan, KS. The new facility represents an advancement in the district’s ability to provide fire protection and emergency response services to the southern portion of Riley County. Construction began in February of 2024. The contract with Riley Construction totaled $199,200 and was paid for with existing Fire District Project Funds, meaning the district did not have to take on debt to finance the project. Gina Snyder, executive director of Downtown Manhattan Inc., told Riley County commissioners on Monday the alleys will close July 15 so Kansas Gas Service can enlarge the tube connected to the city’s gas service. “We just have to do what they say when they say,” Snyder said. “They’re on a deadline. Four Manhattan City Manager finalists have recently been identified. The search committee for a new City Manager has narrowed down the candidates to four finalists for the position, and they are all being invited to visit Manhattan later this month. The City will issue a news release once visit information has been finalized, including candidates’ names and plans for an upcoming opportunity for the public to interact with all of the candidates.
