The Defense Department says a soldier from northeast Kansas has died after his patrol came under fire in Afghanistan. The soldier was identified Monday as Sgt. 1st Class Forrest W. Robertson (35), of Westmoreland. The Pentagon says Robertson’s unit was attacked Sunday by small-arms fire in Afghanistan’s Logar province. Robertson was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Troop of the 6th Squadron, 8th Calvary Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division based at Fort Stewart, Ga. As KMAN previously reported, Riley County Noxious Weed Director, Dennis Peterson received the award for Kansas County Official of the Year last week. Commission Chair, Dave Lewis read the nomination letter, the commission sent in, during Monday’s county commission meeting. Peterson said he was “shocked” that he won the award and shared some of his background.  Peterson was vice president of the Kansas Association of Counties Board from 2005-2006, and served as president in 2007. The Big 12 Conference announced K-State junior defensive end Ryan Mueller as its defensive player of the week.  The St. Thomas Aquinas grad finished with seven tackles, including a pair of tackles for loss,  and one sack in K-State’s 41-7 win over Iowa State on Saturday. Kaitlynn Pelger posted 17 kills and Courtney added 13 as K-State volleyball took down #25 Oklahoma in straight sets, 25-22, 29-27, 25-22 on Sunday night at Ahearn Fieldhouse.  The Cats hit with a .266 offensive efficiency as a team against the Sooners, including a clip of .441 in the opening set.  As individuals, Pelger hit .481 and Traxson hit .391.  Katie Brand dished out 38 assists, and also led K-State (15-7, 3-6) with eight digs.  Chelsea Keating had a career-high five blocks, including two solo stuffs.  The Cats served up five aces, including two from Pelger.  Oklahoma (18-6, 6-4) was…

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) Linebacker Tamba Hali and cornerback Sean Smith returned turnovers for touchdowns in extending the Kansas City Chiefs’ perfect start to nine straight games with a 23-13 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Hali put the Chiefs ahead for good by scoring on an 11-yard fumble return with 12:47 remaining. Smith changed the momentum of the game by intercepting Jeff Tuel’s pass at the goal line and returning it 100 yards to tie it at 10 in the opening minutes of the second half. Update: 9:30 a.m. Monday KMAN received the name of a man early Monday who was involved in a high-speed chase and a series of other crimes over the weekend. Devoris Newson (27) of Junction City, was arrested by the Riley County Police Department for a string of crimes including, criminal restraint, criminal trespass, aggravated intimidation of a victim or witness, theft of a motor vehicle, and domestic battery. RCPD used the IRIS Alert System as well as social media to warn the public that they were looking for a black male with facial tattoos who was involved in a police investigation.…
