TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Education officials say new math and English testing that will be recommended next month to the Kansas State Board of Education will be aligned with new curriculum standards and give more flexibility to student testing. The changes were outlined during a meeting Wednesday in Topeka. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports education commissioner Diane DeBacker will recommend that the board approve using the Smarter Balance tests in grades three through eight. October sales tax numbers are in and Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen says he’s basking in the glow of the latest reports. $1,010,865 was collected in Manhattan in October, which is $105,276 over last year. The city had budgeted for $833,304 so the on million dollar number is about $117,174 more than that. Hayen attributes the big bump from intercollegiate athletics. The City Finance Director adds with two months remaining in the year, the city is slightly ahead of last year’s record total. Former K-State standout Cartier Martin scored 17 points off the bench in his Atlanta Hawks debut on Wednesday night, but the Dallas Mavericks won both teams’ season opener 118-109. Martin made 4 out of 8 shots from the field, including three three pointers, and drained all six of his free throw attempts.  He also grabbed 2 rebounds, along with one assist and one steal.
