Manhattan city commissioners are talking about laying off as many as 70 city employees as they consider cost-cutting measures to avert what they say is a potential budget crisis. City officials during Tuesday’s meeting weighed options to increase the general fund. The fund’s cash balance is expected to drop from $11 million to $6 million by the end of 2024. Officials have said they like to keep the cash reserve above $10 million. Commissioners have initially targeted a combination of staff reductions and tax increases. 31 year old Demetrius Salon Ivory Jr. of Ogden was arrested Thursday night on one count of aggravated battery: knowingly cause great bodily harm or disfigurement. He was arrested at the intersection of Riley Avenue and North Elm Street, and is still confined within the Riley County Jail on a $20,000 bond.

K-State football has added another commitment to it’s Class of 2025 with four-star offensive lineman Brock Heath makng public his pledge to join the Cats. The USD 383 Manhattan-Ogden Board of Education on Wednesday voted unanimously to establish Boys and Girls Club programs at Frank V. Bergman and Ogden elementary schools, the only two without a previous on-site partnership. The two schools had before-and after-school programs before using 21st Century Community Learning Center grants, but ongoing complications including financial problems and low staffing prompted the district to seek an expansion of its agreement with Boys and Girls Club.
