Sales tax reports for Manhattan in September are good, according to City Finance Director Bernie Hayen. Hayen indicates nearly every retail segment was up compared to a year ago. $827,037 were collected in the September numbers, which actually reflect July retail sales. That’s up $90,702 from 2012 numbers. The adjusted rate was $781,058 . That amount is well over the  $677,560 budgeted for that time frame.

It ended up being a false alarm, but the Jeffrey Energy Center located in Pottawatomie County evacuated its office section at 10 Tuesday morning. Westar Energy Spokesman Leonard Allen tells KMAN the evacuation decision was made due to a strange smell in the office, which was determined to have been caused by some type of substance in duct work. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Department and Emergency Management were notified and Manhattan Fire’s Haz-Mat Unit was also called in. U.S. Senator Pat Roberts issued a statement Tuesday about the government shutdown. “No one wants a government shutdown”, Roberts commented. He said in the past 72 hours, republicans have offered up three different solutions to give the American people what they want, which is a goverment that works for the people and protection from the health care law that is hurting the economy. After leading the Kansas City Royals to their best record in 24 years, the club announced on Tuesday morning that manager Ned Yost has been rewarded with a two-year contract extension. Yost’s contract expired after this season, but general manager Dayton Moore said last week he was bringing him back. The Royals finished 10 games above the .500 mark at 86-76, the franchise’s best record since they went 92-70 in 1989. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) The Austin American Statesman is reporting that Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds will step down in August 2014 and move into a consulting role at the nation’s wealthiest college athletic program. Dodds could not immediately be reached for comment. Dodds vigorously denied a report earlier this month that he was stepping down on Dec. 31. Under the retirement plan to be announced Tuesday, Dodds will remain on the job through Aug. 31, 2014 and move into a consulting role through 2015. Dodds, 76, has been at Texas for 32 years.
